The invention relates to the use of 1-alkyl-2-alkyl pyridinium halide (e.g., 1-ethyl-2-methyl pyridinium bromide), 1-alkyl-3-alkyl pyridinium halide (e.g., 1-ethyl-3-methyl pyridinium bromide) or 1-alkyl-3-alkyl imidazolium halide (e.g., 1-butyl 3-methyl imidazolium bromide) as additives in an electrolyte used in hydrogen/bromine cells, for complexing the elemental bromine formed in such cells. The invention also provides an electrolyte comprising aqueous hydrogen bromide and said additives, and processes for operating an electrochemical flow cell selected from the group consisting of hydrogen/bromine or vanadium/bromine cells.

Additives for hydrogen/bromine cells

A method for reducing the biological contamination of indoor air and sanitizing the walls and surfaces in a closed space, which method comprises causing a stream of air to flow upwardly through a treatment zone, and to contact, on a substantially horizontally aligned perforated surface, with a stream of brine solution having Redox potential of not less than 500 mV, whereby an active layer is formed on said horizontally aligned perforated surface, in which layer the brine and air mix, and delivering the treated air which exits said treatment zone into the space to be sanitized.

Apparatus and method for air treatment and sanitization

A method for reducing biological contamination of indoor air, which method includes providing a concentrated salt solution, which is either (i) a brine capable of responding to aeration thereof by a rapid increase of its Redox potential, wherein the rate of said increase is greater than the rate of increase observed for a 45% (w/w) calcium chloride solution subjected to identical aeration conditions; or (ii) a brine which is passed through an electrolytic cell in order to raise its Redox potential; circulating said concentrated salt solution through a treatment zone; causing a stream of biologically contaminated air to flow through said treatment zone, such that said contaminated air is contacted with said salt solution in said treatment zone; and withdrawing purified air from said treatment zone.

Method and apparatus for treating biologically contaminated air

Provided is an anticorrosive composition for use in aqueous salt solutions. The composition contains an antimony compound and at least two other components selected from morpholine derivatives, acetylenic alcohols, ascorbic acid derivatives, and selenium compounds. The composition is particularly useful for inhibiting corrosion of metallic surfaces of drilling devices or refrigeration systems that are in contact with salt brines at elevated temperatures.

Corrosion inhibitors

A liquid composition comprising a high-capacity aqueous carrier in which (i) a metalloid compound selected from the group consisting of antimony and germanium compounds and (ii) morpholine or derivative thereof are dissolved in the presence of (iii) unsaturated alcohol and (iv) water-soluble organic acid having reducing capacity, wherein the total concentration of said four components is preferably not less than 5% relative to the total weight of the composition. The composition is useful as a corrosion inhibitor. Also provided is a process for preparing the composition.

A method of operating a cooling tower comprises feeding to the cooling tower a make-up stream of water containing organic and/or biological contaminants, causing a side stream taken from the recirculating stream to pass through an electrolytic cell, removing solids precipitating by the action of the cell, and remixing the treated side stream with the main stream, before feeding them to the cooling tower.

Processes for the electrophilic substitution of aromatic compounds, such as alkylation, with a desired substituent are disclosed. The processes include contacting the aromatic compound, a precursor of the desired substituent and an aqueous reagent containing zinc halide at elevated temperatures such as above 50&deg; C.

Method of controlling biofouling and microorganism population levels in a water system, comprising adding to the water a redox buffer and oxidizing thereafter. The redox buffer may be a peroxide or hydrogen peroxide (H,O,), which is added to the water. The redox buffer keeps the redox potential between about 250 to 450 mV. The oxidant may include a halogenating chemical which is chosen from among the hypohalite species, such as HOCl, NaOCl, NaOBr, HOBr, OBr,, OCl,, Br,, Cl,and acid solutions. The acid solution is selected from among those containing (Cl,&plus;HCl), (Br,&plus;HBr), (Br,&plus;HCl), trichlorocyanoric acid (TCCA), bromochlorodimethyl hydantoin (BCDMH), dibromodimethyl hydantoin (DBDMH), dichlorodimethyl hydantoin (DCDMH), and other halogen agents, preferably an active chlorine donor or sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) or hypohalide acid (HOX), such as hypochlorous acid (HOCl) or hypobromous acid (HOBr), or hypohalite ion OX, wherein X is Cl or Br, or halohydantoin.

A method is described for the inhibition of corrosion of carbon steels due to heavy brine corrosive attack, which employs As.sup.+z -containing composition. Corrosion inhibiting compositions comprising As.sup.+z, alone or in admixture with urea as a synergistic inhibitor, are also described.

Method for protecting carbon steel from corrosion in heavy brines

A method is disclosed for carrying out the electroless coating of metals with tin. The coating is surprisingly carried out in a bromide brine of very corrosive nature, without causing the corrosion of the metal. Coating is very quick. Coating media for metal immersion, as well as processing conditions, are disclosed.
