A needleless injection system and method for injecting a medical product comprises a needleless injection device having a nozzle assembly defining an ampule chamber for holding medication, an energy device for pushing medication out of the nozzle assembly, and an energy device actuating mechanism. These components are operatively contained in a housing configured for a hand held operation. The energy device is a self-contained gas spring operatively connected to a plunger operating within the ampule chamber. The gas spring is preferably stepped which can be used in many different applications, an air gun being one. The injection device can be provide with a coupling device for coupling a medication supply vial to the nozzle assembly. The nozzle assembly is removably situated in the housing with the plunger removable therewith.

A method for selectively ablating targeted biological material uses real-time optical feedback control to measure incandescent photoemissions emitted from irradiated biological material and, based on the measured incandescent photoemissions, adjust laser pulse parameters to selectively ablate targeted biological material. Laser pulses are directed to a target area of the subject using a delivery system. During each laser pulse, incandescent photoemissions emitted from the biological material having a wavelength of less than that of the laser pulses are measured. Based on such measured incandescent photoemissions, at least one of the wavelenght, pulse duration and energy level of each laser pulse are adjusted in order to selectively ablate targeted soft or hard biological material.

Real-time optical feedback control of laser lithotripsy

A shielded tip catheter for use with a pulsed energy source for fracturing deposits such as urinary and biliary stones and atherosclerotic plaque in the human body is disclosed. The flexible catheter has a shielded tip structure which is adapted for insertion through a fluid passage in a living body. The tip structure can contain an impact element, a scraping implement or a cutting implement. An energy source creates repeated rapid vapor expansions adjacent the element causing it to undergo repeated pulse like movements, imparting a series of high-velocity impulses to an adjacent deposit, thereby fracturing or cutting it. The energy source can be a laser with a fiber optic delivery system in the catheter terminating adjacent the impact element, or a spark generator with a conductor within the catheter to deliver a fluid vaporizing spark adjacent the element.

Method and apparatus for fracturing hard deposits such as urinary and biliary stones and atherosclerotic plaque in the human body. A flexible guide having a hard mass capping an end is adapted for insertion through a fluid passage in a living body. An energy source creates a rapid vapor expansion adjacent to the cap causing it to undergo a pulse like movement, imparting a high-velocity impulse to an adjacent deposit, thereby fracturing it. The energy source may be a laser with a fiber optic delivery system in the guide terminating adjacent to the cap to cause vaporization of the mass cap to create the vapor expansion. The energy source may be a spark generator with a conductor associated with the guide to deliver a fluid vaporizing spark adjacent to the mass cap. Other forms of rapid energy delivery such as chemical detonations or ballistic impact may also be applicable.
