A processing system synchronizes the display of a frame of video at an array of variable refresh rate (VRR) display modules of a display wall by dynamically adjusting a frequency and phase of the refresh rates of the VRR display modules via network protocols based on a selected master timing signal. The processing system selects a master timing signal and transmits the master timing signal to video processing units (VPUs) that render portions of the frame for display at the VRR display modules. Each VPU adjusts the frequency and phase of the VRR display modules for which it renders portions of the frame based on the master timing signal.

Display wall synchronization using variable refresh rate modules

A display system supports variable refresh rates that include a plurality of refresh rates. A source such as a graphics processing unit (GPU) provides frames to the display system at a selected one of the refresh rates. The refresh rates are factored into a corresponding plurality of prime factors. A plurality of numbers of lines per frame in frames provided at the plurality of refresh rates is determined based on one or more ratios of the plurality of refresh rates, the plurality of prime factors, and a line rate for providing frames to the display system at the plurality of refresh rates. The source then selectively provides frames to the display system at one refresh rate of the plurality of refresh rates using the same line rate regardless of which refresh rate is chosen. Furthermore, the number of lines per frame is an integer for frames provided at the refresh rates.

Video timing for display systems with variable refresh rates

Systems, apparatuses, and methods for reducing three dimensional (3D) lookup table (LUT) interpolation error while minimizing on-chip storage are disclosed. A processor generates a plurality of mappings from a first gamut to a second gamut at locations interspersed throughout a 3D representation of the pixel component space. For example, in one implementation, the processor calculates mappings for 17×17×17 vertices within the 3D representation. Other implementations can include other numbers of vertices. Rather than increasing the number of vertices to reduce interpolation error, the processor calculates mappings for centroids of the sub-cubes defined by the vertices within the 3D representation of the first gamut. This results in a smaller increase to the LUT size as compared to increasing the number of vertices. The centroid mappings are used for performing tetrahedral interpolation to map source pixels in the first gamut into the second gamut with a reduced amount of interpolation error.

Reducing 3D lookup table interpolation error while minimizing on-chip storage

There are many instances where a standard dynamic range ('SDR') overlay is displayed over high dynamic range (“HDR”) content on HDR displays. Because the overlay is SDR, the maximum brightness of the overlay is much lower than the maximum brightness of the HDR content, which can lead to the SDR elements being obscured if those elements have at least some transparency. The present disclosure provides techniques including modifying the luminance of either or both of the HDR and SDR content when an SDR layer with some transparency is displayed over HDR content. A variety of techniques are provided. In one example, a fixed adjustment is applied to pixels of one or both of the SDR layer and the HDR layer. The fixed adjustment comprises decreasing the luminance of the HDR layer and/or increasing the luminance of the SDR layer. In another example, a variable adjustment is applied.

Method and system for improved visibility in blended layers for high dynamic range displays

An image generation apparatus includes at least a first configuration register that includes first configuration data for configuring parameters of an image processor, at least a second configuration register that includes second configuration data for configuring the parameters of a same image processing pipeline in the image processor, multiplexing logic coupled to the first configuration register and to the second configuration register, control logic that controls the multiplexing logic to in a non-demonstration mode select one of the first or second configuration registers to produce a first image frame and operative in a demonstration mode to provide both the first and second configuration data for the same image processing pipeline of the image processor to use for generating different regions of an image frame.

Method and apparatus for controlling image processing pipeline configuration data during demonstration and non-demonstration modes

In some examples, an apparatus obtains source layer pixels, such as those of a content image and first destination layer pixels, such as those of a destination image. The first destination layer pixels have associated alpha values. The apparatus obtains information that indicates a first blending color format for the alpha values. The first blending color format is different from a first destination layer color format for the first destination layer pixels and an output color format for a display. The apparatus converts the source and/or first destination layer pixels to the first blending color format. The apparatus generates first alpha blended pixels based on alpha blending the source layer pixels with the first destination layer pixels using the associated alpha values. The apparatus provides, for display on the display, the first alpha blended pixels.

Method and apparatus for alpha blending images from different color formats

A graphics processing unit (GPU) of a processing system transmits pixel data for a frame to a display in a compressed burst, so that the pixel data is communicated at a rate that is higher than the rate at which the display scans out the pixel data to refresh the frame at a display panel. By transmitting pixel data for the frame in a compressed burst, the GPU shortens the time spent transmitting the pixel data and extends the time before the next frame of pixel data is to be transmitted. During the extended time before the next frame of pixel data is to be transmitted, the GPU saves power by placing portions of the processing system in a reduced power mode.

Accelerated frame transmission

A display system modifies display cycles of one or more displays to perform a system operation while avoiding visual perturbations at the one or more displays. The display system modifies, synchronizes, or both, blanking periods of the one or more displays such that blanking periods equal or exceed a blackout duration and overlap for at least the blackout duration. Then the system performs the system operation during an overlapping portion of the one or more blanking periods, where the system operation reduces availability of display data at the one or more displays.

Display cycle control system

A system includes a display monitor compatible with a video specification having a reference EOTF while exhibiting an actual EOTF that deviates from the reference EOFT. The system further includes a video source subsystem operable to determine an approximated EOTF representative of the actual EOTF based on user input received from a display of at least one test pattern to the user via the display monitor. The at least one test pattern is intended to elicit input from the user based on a visual inspection of the at least one test pattern by the user. The video source subsystem further is to convert color values of each video image of a stream of images to corresponding non-linear codewords based on the approximated EOTF, and transmit the codewords to the display monitor for display as display images representative of the video images.

Pre-display adaptive codeword mapping for display monitor with non-ideal electro-optical transfer function

A graphics processing unit (GPU) includes a timing reference one or more processors configured to generate and provide, based on the timing reference, frames to a display system that supports variable refresh rates. The frames include a vertical blanking region having a first duration. The display system transmits information indicating an operation to be performed by the display system during the vertical blanking region of one or more subsequent frames. The one or more processors are configured to increase the first duration to a second duration in response to receiving the information indicating an operation to be performed by the display system during the vertical blanking region of at least one subsequent frame. In some cases, the first duration of the vertical blanking region is a minimum duration that corresponds to a maximum refresh rate supported by the display system.

Reduced vertical blanking regions for display systems that support variable refresh rates

A display system receives first timing information prior to the display system entering a panel self-refresh (PSR) mode. The display system supports a range of refresh rates. Prior to the display system entering the PSR mode, first timing information indicating a first refresh rate that is lower than a maximum refresh rate supported by the display system is received by the display system. The display system then refreshes images at a second refresh rate that is less than or equal to the first refresh rate using a frame stored in a buffer prior to entering the PSR mode. In some cases, the processing unit also receives second timing information from the display system in response to initiating an exit from a panel self-refresh (PSR) mode. The second timing information indicates a current scanout line that is used to schedule transmission of a subsequent frame.

Resynchronization of a display system and GPU after panel self refresh
