This disclosure describes improved systems and methods for displaying respiratory data to a clinician in a ventilatory system. Respiratory data may be displayed by any number of suitable means, for example, via appropriate graphs, diagrams, charts, waveforms, and other graphic displays. The disclosure describes novel systems and methods for determining and displaying ineffective patient inspiratory or expiratory efforts or missed breaths in a manner easily deciphered by a clinician.

Systems and methods for missed breath detection and indication

This disclosure describes systems and methods for monitoring and evaluating data associated with ventilatory parameters to detect expiratory airflow limitation in a ventilated patient. For example, a ventilator may monitor flow and/or pressure during ventilation of the patient. Based on the flow and/or pressure measurements, or ventilatory data derived therefrom, the ventilator may calculate expiratory resistance. Moreover, the ventilator may trend expiratory resistance over time to produce an expiratory resistance waveform. In embodiments, the ventilator may calculate the slope of the expiratory resistance waveform during an initial part of exhalation. If the slope of the expiratory resistance waveform during the initial part of exhalation breaches a defined slope threshold, the ventilator may determine that the patient exhibits expiratory airflow limitation.

Detection of expiratory airflow limitation in ventilated patient

This disclosure describes systems and methods for configuring a ventilator to estimate the carinal pressure to minimize the work of breathing due to a breathing tube. A patient's carina is a cartilaginous ridge located at the site of the tracheal bifurcation between the two primary bronchi. An estimated carinal pressure (a pressure estimated to exist at the patient carina) may be determined and used as feedback control for the carinal pressure. According to embodiments, the estimated carinal pressure may be compared to the carinal pressure command to determine an error. The carinal pressure command may be positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP) or some other suitable target pressure. The error between the estimated carinal pressure and the carinal pressure command may then be used as feedback control to achieve the carinal pressure command and thereby to minimize the work of breathing due to the breathing tube.

Using estimated carinal pressure for feedback control of carinal pressure during ventilation

There is disclosed an endotracheal tube which has a minimal cross-sectional profile for easy viewing of anatomical features during intubation. After the tube is placed into the trachea, the tube is adapted to increase the diameter. In this manner the tube diameter may be expanded to allow for decreased Work of Breathing (WOB) for patient, while not having so large a diameter as to cause tracheal discomfort.

The disclosure describes that the method for automatically initiating ventilation includes inputting a physical characteristic of the subject into a ventilator. The physical characteristic may be ideal body weight, height, or age. Based on the inputted physical characteristic, one or more ventilation parameters are calculated. The disclosure describes initiating ventilation based on the calculated parameters. During ventilation at least one physiological parameter of the subject is monitored. At least one ventilation parameter may be adjusted based on the monitoring of the physiological parameters and the inputted physical characteristic.
