Embodiments relate to illuminated electrosurgical devices and related systems and methods. An electrosurgical device can include an electrosurgical blade having a proximal end and a distal end and comprising a dielectric coating, at least one of the electrosurgical blade or the dielectric coating including at least one light-guiding element, an optic having a proximal end and a distal end, the distal end of the optic optically coupled to the proximal end of the electrosurgical blade, and a light source arranged at the proximal end of the optic and configured to provide light that is guided through the optic and the at least one light-guiding element to illuminate an area around the distal end of the electrosurgical blade.

Illuminated electrosurgical devices, systems and methods

Systems, such as an electrosurgical unit, and method for use with an active electrode and a plurality of return electrodes are disclosure. An electrosurgical treatment is provided to tissue via the active electrode at a treatment site and a first return electrode of the plurality of return electrodes at the treatment site. An impedance measurement is received or determined of an impedance in the tissue between the active electrode at the treatment site and a second return electrode of the plurality of return electrodes at a site remote from the treatment site.

Electrosurgical unit and system

Unintended current flow or plasma discharge has been observed in known illuminated electrosurgical devices having a metallic tubular heat sink surrounding a conductive electrode and an illumination element, and having a distal outer edge that abuts against the light emitting element. An insulating, shielding or other isolating element that prevents or discourages unintended plasma formation between the distal outer edge and nearby patient tissue can reduce the potential for tissue damage to a patient or injury to a surgeon.

A multipurpose electrosurgical device is configurable in a bipolar mode and a monopolar mode using a three-conductor electrical input. The device includes a switching mechanism that provides signals corresponding with a first function and a second function in a monopolar mode. An electrosurgical system having an electrosurgical device, an accessory charging circuit, and an electrosurgical unit is disclosed. The electrosurgical device is operable in at least one of a monopolar mode and a bipolar mode. The electrosurgical unit provides one of a monopolar RF energy signal and a bipolar RF energy signal to the electrosurgical device corresponds with an activated mode and a bipolar signal to the accessory charging circuit.

An electrosurgical system includes an electrosurgical unit electrically coupled to a surgical retractor. The electrosurgical unit includes an RF output and an RF return. The surgical retractor includes a return pad electrically coupled to the RF return of the electrosurgical unit. The electrosurgical unit includes an RF output configured to be coupled to an electrosurgical device, such as an electrosurgical device configured in a monopolar mode. A controller is configured to determine an impedance in tissue at a surgical area electrically disposed between the RF output and the and the RF return. The surgical retractor includes a handle and a blade configured to interface with tissue. The blade includes a return electrode.

Surgical instrument and system

A modular surgical retractor including a handle and a blade. The handle includes a base and a neck. The neck projects from an end of the base to a tail region. The blade includes a head section and a blade member. The head section includes opposing side walls and a floor combining to define a slot sized to receive the neck. The blade member projects from the head section. The blade is removably attached to the handle. In some embodiments, a light source, such as an LED, is disposed within the neck and arranged to emit light along a face of the blade member. Two or more additional blades are provided, each additional blade including the head section and a differently configured blade member.

An electrosurgical unit including a radiofrequency generator configured to generate electrosurgical energy. The radiofrequency generator includes a first receptacle configured to electrically couple with an electrosurgical hand piece configured to deliver bipolar radiofrequency energy. A second receptacle is included and configured to electrically couple with an electrosurgical hand piece configured to deliver monopolar radiofrequency energy. The radiofrequency generator includes a relay circuit configured to allow simultaneous radiofrequency energy delivery to the electrosurgical hand pieces in the first receptacle and the second receptacle.

RF output stage switching mechanism

An electrosurgical unit having power monitoring circuitry for reducing leakage current in an electrosurgical unit. The electrosurgical unit includes a power source configured to produce direct current, an RF waveform generator configured to convert the direct current into an RF signal, a voltage sensor configured to measure DC input voltage to the RF waveform generator, a current sensor configured to measure output current feedback, and a processor. The processor is configured to estimate output voltage feedback based at least upon the measured DC input voltage and the measured output current feedback, and output a control signal to control the DC input voltage to the RF waveform generator, the control signal based at least upon the estimated output voltage and the output current feedback.

Power monitoring circuitry and method for reducing leakage current in RF generators

An electrosurgical system monitors and visually indicates a degree of contact between a return electrode and a patient's skin. The system includes an electrosurgical generator and a return pad. The return pad includes a return electrode, a lighting element, and a cable electrically and mechanically coupling the return electrode to the generator. The lighting element is configured to emit light based on the degree of contact between the return electrode and the patient's tissue (e.g., skin).
