A system and method for automatically linking partitions on storage media for use within a storage management system is provided to minimize wasted space on the storage media, the time and expense traditionally spent reclaiming partitions containing invalid data, and the computer processing capability required to write data to and read data from the storage media. The storage management system includes a partitioned storage tape, a host application running on a server, and an archive device. The host application is operative to track location information for each host file or data object written to the storage tape. Using the location information, the host application is able to identify one or more 'free' or writable partitions that are created on the storage tape as host files expire. Moreover, when writing host files to the storage tape, the archive device is operative to automatically link the writable partitions to form logical volumes such that when reading host files from the storage tape, the archive device can automatically navigate through the logical volumes.

Automatically linking partitions on a tape media device

A system and method for processing a plurality of data storage and retrieval management or manifest files in a virtual data storage system. A plurality of individual management/manifest files, which are each used to track data management information stored on a data storage device, are merged into a single management or manifest file that can then be used to subsequently manage the input or import of data such as logical volumes from one or more physical media. This single management/manifest file could be used, for example, in a media import operation for importing a media cartridge or device into a media library such as a data storage library.

System and method for processing data management files in a virtual storage environment

A general purpose method is provided for interfacing with a storage device having a tape medium. The method includes receiving data from a first source, and creating a first data packet having at least a portion of the data from the first source. The method also includes receiving data from a second source, and creating a second data packet having at least a portion of the data from the second source. The method further includes receiving additional data from the first source, and creating a third data packet having at least a portion of the additional data from the first source. The method still further includes transmitting the first data packet, the second data packet and the third data packet to the storage device, and storing the first data packet, the second data packet, and the third data packet on the tape medium in an interleaved configuration. A system including control logic is also provided for performing the method.
