A method and composition is described for reducing the levels of hydrogen sulfide in a fluid such as a hydrocarbon stream. The method involves contacting the gas stream with a composition comprising a mixture of amines reacted with formaldehyde. The composition reduces the formation and deposition of solids commonly associated with spent triazine scavengers.

A method, scrubbing solution and apparatus for removing a HS scavenger, for example dithiazine, from a gas stream uses an acidic solution to convert the HS scavenger to a salt. The acidic solution may be a phosphoric acid solution.

Improved corrosion inhibitors for well brines include a phosphonate or salts thereof, and a gluconic acid or salts thereof. The inhibitors are normally injected downhole into the brines. A method of determining sulfur content in an aqueous fluid containing spent hydrogen sulfide scavenger from a scrubber or contactor tower is described as is a method of optimizing the hydrogen sulfide scavenger treatment rate in a scrubber or contactor tower. The method includes the steps of providing a sample of an aqueous fluid from the scrubbing tower where the aqueous fluid contains spent hydrogen sulfide scavenger; and using x-ray fluorescence to determine the amount of total sulfur in the sample. The method may also use the total sulfur content in the sample to determine the spent hydrogen sulfide scavenger in the sample and/or determine scavenger uptake. The method may also include the step of adjusting the amount of scavenger introduced into the aqueous fluid in the tower in response to the scavenger uptake, to optimize the scavenger treatment in the scrubber or contactor tower.

Phosphate esters useful for gelling hydrocarbons in combination with a metal source are disclosed along with methods of preparation of the phosphate esters. Fouling in oil refinery towers has been attributed due to distillation of impurities present in phosphate esters used to gel hydrocarbons for oil well fracturing. The improved method of preparation of the phosphate ester results in a product that substantially reduces or eliminates volatile phosphorus, which is phosphorus impurities that distill up to 250&#xb0; C., and increases the high temperature viscosity of the hydrocarbon gels formed using the phosphate esters.

Nonionic derivatized starch of varying degrees of substitution may be used as a fluid loss additive for well bore cementing operations. A well bore cementing composition may include a cement and a nonionic derivatized starch, the nonionic derivatized starch in a concentration in the cement to provide a fluid loss of less than 200 cc/30 min. A method for cementing subterranean zones penetrated by a well bore may include: providing a cement slurry including mix water, hydraulic cement and a nonionic derivatized starch as an additive for fluid loss control in well cementing applications; pumping the cement slurry into a well; and holding the cement slurry in place until it sets.

Fluid loss additives and methods

Fluids useful in oil well drilling operations are described. The fluids comprise standard viscosifying and fluid loss control additives along with phosphonates or phosphate esters of organic ligands. The addition of the phosphonates or phosphate esters at effective concentrations prevents the adherence of heavy oil and heavy oil laden drill cuttings to drill pipe strings and well bore casings.
