An intrinsically safe portable radio device () having a portable radio device housing (). A first radio section () is an intrinsically safe circuit is (ISC) disposed within the housing and arranged to perform at least one function to facilitate operation of the portable radio device. A second radio section () ISC is disposed within the housing and arranged to perform at least a second function to facilitate operation of the portable radio device. Each of the first and second ISCs independently satisfy a defined standard for intrinsically safe devices.

Intrinsically safe portable radio architecture

A communications device includes a first radio () configured to support wireless communications with a second radio () using a plurality of communications modes. The device includes a switch element () configured to cause the first radio to transmit when actuated. The device also includes a control element () for detecting one or more actuations of the switch element and configured to select a one of the plurality of communications modes based on a sequence of the actuations of the switch element detected by the control element during a pre-defined time interval and to cause a wireless transmission from the first radio to the second radio according to the one of the plurality of communications modes.

Multi-mode communications system

A radio communications system () includes a portable radio () and a mobile radio (), the portable radio () being configured to remotely control the mobile radio (). The portable radio () can operate in a standalone mode, in which the mobile radio () communicates with other radio devices using the portable radio's RF interface (). The portable radio () can also operate in a remote mode, in which the portable radio () is operative to establish a wireless link between the portable radio () and the mobile radio () to thereby remotely control the mobile radio () and to use the mobile radio's RF interface () to communicate with other radio devices.

A portable electronic device is provided. The electronic device includes a device body having at least one accessory interface and at least one display device positioned on a surface of the device body. The electronic device also includes a display driver device communicatively coupled to the display device and configured for receiving data for presentation on the display device and generating signals for causing the data to be presented on the display device. In the electronic device, the display driver device selects one orientation from a plurality of pre-defined orientations for the data on the display device based at least on a current orientation of the device body and a status of the accessory interface.

A software-defined radio includes a pair of radio subsystems such as a red (command) and black (data) radio subsystem having an operating environment conforming to the Software Communications Architecture (SCA) specification, for example, as used for Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS). A clock is read by at least one of the radio subsystems for determining time of day. A processor of the radio subsystem is operative for distributing the time of day to the radio subsystems using a global hardware timing pulse. Each processor can include a free-running timer to which any time sources within the pair of radio subsystems are set.

A software defined radio has a radio circuit and executable radio software system operable with the radio circuit, and defining an operating environment that allows a waveform application to operate with the radio circuit for transmitting and receiving voice and data. A processor, such as a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), is operable with the radio circuit and includes an event sequencer for controlling the sequence and timing of events in the radio circuit.
