This invention relates to the oligomerization of olefinic compounds in the presence of an activated oligomerization catalyst. The invention also extends to a particular manner for providing an activated oligomerization catalyst. According to the present invention, there is provided a process for producing an oligomeric product by the oligomerization of at least one olefinic compound, the process including (a) providing an activated oligomerization catalyst by combining, in any order, iii) a source of chromium, &#x3b9;v) a ligating compound of the formula (R)mX(Y)X(R)n wherein Xand Xare independently an atom selected from the group consisting of nitrogen, phosphorus, arsenic, antimony, bismuth, oxygen, sulphur and selenium or said atom oxidized by S, Se, N or O where the valence of Xand/or Xallows for such oxidation, Y is a linking group between Xand Xwhich linking group contains at least one nitrogen atom which is directly bonded to Xor X, m and n are independently 0, 1 or a larger integer, and Rand Rare independently hydrogen, a hydrocarbyl group, an organoheteryl group or a heterohydrocarbyl group, and the respective Rgroups are the same or different when m&#x3e;1, and the respective Rgroups are the same or different when n&#x3e;1, in) a catalyst activator which is an organoboron compound including a cation and a non-coordinating anion of the general formula [(R)xL*-H]+[B(R)4]wherein L* is an atom selected from the group consisting of N, S and P, the cation [(R)x L*-H]* is a Bronsted acid, x is an integer 1, 2 or 3, each Ris the same or different when x is 2 or 3 and each is a &#x2014;H, hydrocarbyl group or a heterohydrocarbyl group, provided that at least one of Rcomprises at least 6 carbon atoms and provided further that the total number of carbon atoms in (R)x collectively is greater than 12, Rindependently at each occurrence is selected from the group consisting of hydride, dialkylamido, halide, alkoxide, aryloxide, hydrocarbyl, halosubstituted-hydrocarbyl radicals, halosubstituted-alkoxide, halosubstituted-aryloxide and a halosubstituted aromatic ring moiety with at least one halide substituent on the aromatic ring, and vi) an aliphatic solvent, and (b) contacting the at least one olefinic compound with the activated oligomerization catalyst to produce an oligomeric product.

Oligomerisation of olefinic compounds in the presence of an activated oligomerisation catalyst

According to the present invention there is provided a process for producing an oligomeric product by the oligomerisation of at least one olefinic compound including: A) providing an activated oligomerisation catalyst comprising the combination of: i) a source of a transition metal; ii) a ligating compound of the formula (R)X(Y)X(R)iii) a metal containing activator; and (iv) at least one olefinic compound; B) diluting the activated oligomerisation catalyst of A with an introduced liquid medium; and C) contacting the at least one olefinic compound to be oligomerised with the diluted activated catalyst of B to produce an oligomeric product.

Oligomerisation of olefinic compounds in the presence of a diluted metal containing activator

This invention relates to the oligomerisation of olefinic compounds in the presence of an oligomerisation catalyst activated in two stages by two catalyst activators According to the invention there is provided a process for activating an oligomerisation catalyst by contacting the catalyst with i) a first activator component selected from the group consisting of the aluminoxanes and a mixture of at least one aluminoxane and at least one organylaluminium compound, and ii) a second activator component which is an organylaluminium compound, the process being characterised therein that the oligomerisation catalyst is first contacted with one of the first activator component or second activator component, and the resulting mixture is thereafter contacted with the other of the first activator component or second activator component.

Two stage activation of oligomerisation catalyst and oligomerisation of olefinic compounds in the presence of an oligomerisation catalyst so activated

This invention relates to a process for producing an oligomeric product by the oligomerization of at least one olefinic compound by contacting the at least one olefinic compound with an oligomerization catalyst in an aliphatic liquid medium at a reaction temperature of at least 50&#xb0; C. The catalyst comprises the combination of a source of a transition metal; and a ligating compound of the formula (R)X(Y) X(R).

Oligomerisation of olefinic compounds in an aliphatic medium

The invention provides a mixed heteroatomic ligand for an oligomerization of olefins catalyst, which ligand includes at least three heteroatoms, of which at least one heteroatom is sulfur and at least two heteroatoms are not the same. The invention also provides a multidentate mixed heteroatomic ligand for an oligomerization of olefins catalyst, which ligand includes at least three heteroatoms of which at least one is a sulfur atom. The ligand may also contain, in addition to sulfur, at least one nitrogen or phosphorous heteroatom.

Trimerisation and oligomerisation of olefins using a chromium based catalyst

The invention describes a process for trimerisation olefins, which process includes the step of contacting an olefinic feedstream with a catalyst system which includes a transition metal compound and a heteroatomic ligand and wherein the trimer is an olefin and wherein the heteroatomic ligand is described by the following general formula (R)A-B-C(R).

Trimerisation of olefins

The invention describes a process for tetramerisation of olefins wherein the product stream of the process contains more than 30% of the tetramer olefin. A process for the production of dimers from an olefinic feedstock containing &agr;-olefins, by contacting the feedstock with a metallocene/aluminoxane catalyst, thereby selectively to dimerize &agr;-olefins in the feedstock by way of a metallocene-catalyzed dimerization reaction. The feedstock is in the form of a Fischer-Tropsch-derived definic feedstock involving a mixture of Fischer-Tropsch-derived hydrocarbons made up of at most 90% by mass of &agr;-olefins, at least 5% by mass of olefins, other than &agr;-olefins, selected from linear internal olefins, branched internal olefins, cyclic olefins, dienes, trienes and mixtures thereof, at least 5% by mass of constituents, other than olefins, selected from paraffins, oxygenated hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons and mixtures thereof. The metallocene-catalyzed dimerization reaction takes place while the olefins which are dimerized form part of the mixture constituted by the feedstock.
