An ultrasonic meter configured to operate in multiple classes is provided including a flowtube having an inlet at a first end and an outlet at a second end, opposite the first end; and first and second face to face transducers, the first transducer being positioned at the first end of the flowtube and the second transducer being positioned at the second end of the flowtube, wherein the first and second face to face transducers are positioned in line with flow through the ultrasonic meter. A method for an ultrasonic time-of-flight flow meter () includes driving an ultrasonic transducer () using a first waveform (V(t)) for a first duration (&#x394;t), the first waveform (V(t)) configured to cause oscillation () of the ultrasonic transducer (). The method also includes driving the ultrasonic transducer () using a second waveform (V(t)) for a second duration (&#x394;t). There is a discontinuity between the first waveform (V(t)) and the second waveform (V(t)). The second waveform (V(t)) and the second duration (&#x394;t) are configured to maintain a voltage (V(t)) across the ultrasonic transducer () within a predetermined range (V, V).

Distortion of an optical signal transmitted over a fibre optic link is characterized by a receiver including a photodetector for converting optical radiation into an electrical signal. A delay line delays the electrical signal. At least two delay line taps drive a register that stores plural values corresponding with different delayed replicas of the electrical signal. Signals commensurate with the values are externally provided to a signal distortion analyser for analysis of the values to determine the optical signal distortion.

Method and apparatus for providing diagnostic features for an optical transceiver

A housing for a device has first and second segments with opposed adjacent surfaces fixedly connected to each other. The first segment fixedly carries a semiconductor optical source for emitting a linearly polarized optical beam in the general direction of the longitudinal axis of the housing. The second segment fixedly carries an optical fiber element having an end face positioned along the longitudinal axis to intercept the optical beam and a linear optical polarizer. The first and second segments are fixedly positioned relative to each other along the longitudinal axis and in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis so the optical beam, as incident on the end face, has a predetermined geometry and position. The second segment is fixedly positioned about the longitudinal axis so the optical beam, as incident on the end face, is in a predetermined power range.

Optical unit having a transmitter including a semiconductor source and fiber optic element and method of making same

The present invention relates to an optical fibre connector, and in particular to an optical port having a connector receptacle for receiving an optical fibre plug, and to an optical fibre connector assembly for transmitting and/or receiving an optical signal formed by an optical fibre connector and an optical fibre plug when these are joined together. The optical fibre connector assembly comprises an optical fibre connector and an optical fibre plug. The optical fibre plug includes a projecting ferrule and along an axis of this ferrule a first optical fibre. The optical connector including a hollow sleeve and within the sleeve a recessed ferrule and along an axis of this ferrule a second optical fibre. The sleeve has an open end for receiving and holding the projecting ferrule and has at the recessed ferrule a closed end, the arrangement being such that when the projecting ferrule is held within the sleeve both optical fibres are aligned to transmit and/or receive an optical signal along an optical axis defined by the fibres, and the closed end of the sleeve grips the recessed ferrule and the projecting ferrule more securely than the open end of the sleeve grips the projecting ferrule. The result is that if a force is applied at the open end of the ferrule to the projecting ferrule in a direction transverse to the optical axis then the first ferrule pivots within the sleeve about a point that lies closer to the closed end of the sleeve than to the open end of the sleeve.

Optical fibre connector

An optical device has a photodiode placed on a substrate. A guide is formed on the substrate so that it surrounds the photodiode with concentric positioning to an accuracy better than 5 &#x3bc;m. A ferrule of a ferrule assembly engages within the guide for automatic alignment with the photodiode without need for active alignment with monitoring of light signals.

A subassembly apparatus includes a substantially shieldable interior chamber for housing at least one source of electromagnetic radiation, a connector plane external to the interior chamber for locating an end surface of a connector, and a launch window for locating an end surface of a waveguide, where the launch window is in or adjacent the connector plane. The apparatus also includes an internal propagation path extending from the interior chamber to the launch plane including a barrier of electrically conductive material disposed in the propagation path, the barrier being arranged to shield a planar region from electromagnetic radiation emitted from within the interior chamber, the planar region including substantially the connector plane substantially excluding the launch window.

Interface apparatus, connector apparatus and method of reducing electromagnetic interference

The present invention relates to an optical fiber communication component (), and particularly a connector receptacle () for connecting to a connector plug () having an optical fiber () mounted within a projecting cylindrical ferrule. The connector receptacle () comprises a housing () that has a passageway () with an entrance for receiving the ferrule (). A split sleeve clamp () is seated within the passageway () and has an opening oriented towards the entrance for receiving the projecting ferrule (). A hollow sleeve () having a cylindrical outer surface () and an axially extending open channel (), is gripped by the split sleeve clamp to define the diameter of the opening to the clamp. The open channel () extends along the longitudinal axis () of the passageway () to allow optical radiation () to be transmitted through the channel () to/from said connector plug ().

Optical fiber connector

An eye-safe optical fiber transmitter unit comprises a laser, an optical port, an optical fiber stub with a fiber core carrying optical radiation emitted by the laser to the optical port. The core is an index-guided core surrounded by cladding. Laser radiation is focussed to a spot on a fiber stub entrance face to increase the coupling efficiency of optical radiation into the fiber core and decrease the radiation coupling efficiency of radiation into the surrounding cladding. The coupling efficiency into the core is a maximum at a particular orientation of the entrance face with respect to a focus axis when the focus spot is on the entrance face. The entrance face is not oriented at this particular orientation, but is angled and/or rotated away from the particular orientation to reduce optical coupling efficiency into the fiber core and cladding.
