A load sensor includes a compressible body positionable between two surfaces. The compressible body has a plurality of aligned layers including first and second outer shims with a middle shim positioned therebetween and with a resilient material interposed between each adjacent shim. The second outer shim has a gap that exposes an unsupported area of the middle shim. A strain gauge is coupled to the middle shim in the unsupported area. When the compressible body is uncompressed, the resilient material interposed between the first outer shim and the middle shim has a substantially uniform thickness. When the compressible body is compressed between the two surfaces, the resilient material aligned with the unsupported area and interposed between the first outer shim and the middle shim has a nonuniform thickness such that the middle shim deflects away from the first outer shim in the unsupported area, thereby deforming the strain gauge.

Elastomeric strain gauge load sensors

A rotorcraft has a fuselage, an engine disposed substantially laterally centrally relative to the fuselage, and an air intake system (AIS). The AIS has a first duct configured to provide streamline air flow, a second duct configured to provide streamline air flow, and a combining section configured to receive streamline air flow from each of the first duct and the second duct. The combining section is further configured to output streamline air flow.

A tractor includes a frame defines longitudinal (nominally forward and backward), lateral (nominally left and right), and transverse (nominally up and down) directions (mutually orthogonal). First and second side structures connect by a width adjustment structure comprising beams of bearing length and bearing width capable of supporting loads (torque, bending, etc.) at any of a plurality of widths therebetween. Individual drive systems in the first and second sides each include a track, motor, sprocket, main idler, and bogey idlers. A carrier system secures, lifts, and descends an implement. Implements may be of any type, such as tillage, harrowing, furrowing, seeding, cultivation, personnel carrier, or the like. A controller is capable of directing the tractor based on a pre-determined course of travel, or a guided course in response to physical features in a farming field.

Compact, extensible, track laying, agricultural tractor

An aircraft includes a fuselage and an engine housed in the fuselage. A ram-air engine inlet is formed on an exterior of the fuselage. The ram-air engine inlet is defined, at least in part, by a cowling door. The cowling door is moveable between a closed position and an open position. An intake duct fluidly couples the ram-air engine inlet to the engine. A filter is disposed across the intake duct. A bypass duct is formed in the ram-air engine inlet aft of the intake duct. The bypass duct is operable to be selectively opened and closed.

Method and apparatus for an engine inlet for a ram-air system with an icing bypass

An air intake system (AIS) has a plenum and an inlet barrier filter associated with the plenum, through which air can selectively enter the plenum. The AIS also has an inlet duct associated with the plenum, through which air can selectively enter the plenum. The AIS also has a bypass door associated with the inlet duct, the bypass door being configured to selectively change an amount of air allowed to pass through the inlet duct. The AIS also has a filter airflow change device configured to change an amount of airflow allowed through the inlet barrier filter.

Selectable barrier filtration system

A boundary layer utilization apparatus for intake of air to a high speed aircraft, comprises a first air inlet adjacent an exterior surface of a fuselage of the aircraft and offset from the fuselage enough to integrate a second air inlet in the offset space to ingest and divert the boundary layer air flowing next to the fuselage into the aircraft for a useful purpose such as cooling the engine compartment. The second air inlet is disposed aft of the first air inlet to minimize hot gas re-ingestion.

Properly identifying the most vulnerable areas and quantifying the effectiveness of armor at those locations is critical to achieving efficient armor integration. A method for designing protective armor for a vehicle includes the deriving shotlines through an element; computing a probability of kill value for each shotline in each element; calculating a probability of kill intensity for each element; ranking the elements according to highest probability of kill intensity; mapping the elements in a 3D CAD environment to visually depict the elements having the highest probability of kill intensity; and designing armor taking into account the elements having the highest probability of kill intensity.

Method for analyzing and designing armor in a vehicle

A system and method to control vibrations exerted on a non-vibrating structure. The system includes an adjustable variable stiffness support securely attached to both the non-vibrating structure and a vibrating structure. A driver operably associated with the variable stiffness support is configured to selectively adjust the variable stiffness support. A control system in data communication with both a sensor system and the driver includes an algorithm to determine whether adjustment of the variable stiffness support is required.

Variable stiffness support

A variable stiffness support has a support housing that is configured to adjust the orientation of an internal elastomer assembly. The support housing includes an adjustment mechanism, and the elastomer assembly includes an outer ring that encircles an elastomeric material, a central bushing embedded in the elastomeric material, and a plurality of shims embedded in the elastomeric material in a parallel planar fashion.

A tiltrotor aircraft having a wing and a rotatable pylon carried by the wing is disclosed. The pylon is secured to a pylon support spindle that extends into the wing. A link connects a radial portion of the pylon support spindle to a radial portion of an actuator spindle, such that the pylon support spindle is rotated as the actuator spindle is rotated.
