Apparatus and method for assessing odors, comprises an electronic nose, to be applied to an odor and to output a structure identifying the odor; a neural network which maps an extracted structure to a first location on a pre-learned axis of odor pleasantness; and an output for outputting an assessment of an applied odor based on said first location. The assessment may be a prediction of how pleasant a user will consider the odor.

Predicting odor pleasantness with an electronic nose

There is proposed a methodology for specifying the behavior of reactive systems, which is based on 'Playing in' the system's possible scenarios. The use of this methodology is shown by building a practical 'Play In Engine' tool based on the methodology. Users will be able to connect their Mock-Up GUI to the tool by &#x201c;playing&#x201d; their GUI and specifying the required system reactions in a simple and intuitive manner. As this is being done, the system will automatically generate behavior specifications in the language of Live Sequence Charts (LSCs), or any other suitable requirement language, such as various temporal logics or timing diagrams. On the basis of the system behavior specification, the user can play out scenarios through a play out engine.

An electronic controller connectible to an external system comprises: a plurality of logical networks each capable of assuming a plurality of different states and arranged according to a hierarchy of different networks according to a hierarchy of different states having a one-to-one mapping between states and networks such that any transition between two states affects the two associate networks and their respective lower-order networks. Each of the logical networks includes a storage element for storing its state, means for determining its next state, and means for receiving control signals from, or for outputting control signals to, the immediately higher level logical network and the immediately lower level logical network for determining their respective states. At least some of the logical networks include means for receiving control signals from, or for outputting control signals to, the external system. The logical networks are disposed on a substrate, which includes a plurality of electrical connections connecting the logical networks to provide the one-to-one mapping between states and networks.
