A link establishment process for establishing a network link between the first network interface device and a second network interface device is initiated at the first network interface device. During the link establishment process, the first network interface device receives from the second network interface device via the network link, one or more update messages requesting one or more changes to be applied at the first network interface device, the one or more changes for altering operation of one or both of software and firmware stored in one or more memories included in or coupled to the first network interface device. The one or more changes are applied based on the one or more update messages at the first network interface device.

Software/firware updates during network link establishment

An automotive Ethernet physical-layer (PHY) transceiver includes an Analog Front End (AFE) and a digital processor. The AFE is coupled via a full-duplex Ethernet link to a peer transceiver. The AFE is configured to receive from the peer transceiver, over the full-duplex Ethernet link, an analog Ethernet signal conveying data symbols, at a reception data rate that is lower than a transmission data rate used in transmitting data from the PHY transceiver to the peer transceiver, the Ethernet signal being modulated by a spreading sequence having a Spreading Factor including a ratio between a spreading chip-rate and the reception data rate, and to convert the received analog Ethernet signal into a digital signal. The digital processor is configured to de-spread the digital signal using the spreading sequence to recover the data symbols.

Spread spectrum modulation over an asymmetric ethernet link

A Physical Layer (PHY) transceiver includes communication circuitry and a controller. The communication circuitry includes a digital filter, and is configured to communicate signals using the digital filter over a network link. The controller is configured to monitor a temperature pertaining to the communication circuitry, and, in response to detecting an actual or predicted over-temperature condition, to degrade a functionality of the digital filter so as to reduce power dissipation in the communication circuitry.

Ethernet physical layer transceiver with graceful temperature protection

A transmitter transmits a first signal via a first cable at a first baud rate. A receiver receives a second signal via the first cable concurrently with transmitting the first signal via the first cable. The second signal is transmitted by another device at a second baud rate that is lower than both i) the first baud rate and ii) a third baud rate at which a third signal is being transmitted in a second cable that causes crosstalk in the second signal being received via the first cable. Reception of the second signal at the second baud rate that is lower than the third baud rate facilitates mitigation of the crosstalk in the second signal caused by transmission of the third signal in the second cable at the third baud rate.

Network using asymmetric uplink and downlink baud rates to reduce crosstalk

An Integrated Circuit (IC) includes an electronic circuit and a controller. The electronic circuit is designed to operate at temperatures above a specified minimal temperature. The IC has a controllable operational parameter that affects a performance measure of the electronic circuit and an amount of heat produced by the electronic circuit. The controller is configured to control the operational parameter so as to meet both requirements concurrently: (i) exceeding a specified minimal performance level of the performance measure, and (ii) a local temperature of the electronic circuit exceeding the specified minimal temperature.

Meeting performance and temperature requirements in electronic circuits

A network interface device operates in a normal operating mode in which the network interface device continually receives transmission symbols via a communication link. The network interface device determines that the network interface device is to transition to a low power mode, and in response transitions receiver circuitry to the low power mode. During a transition time period corresponding to determining that that the network interface device is to transition to the low power mode, the network interface device ignores signals received via the communication link.

Energy efficient ethernet (EEE) operation

Methods and systems provide for early detection of failures in cables and/or physical layer devices (PHY) linked thereto, of a communications network in a vehicle. The methods and systems employ a computer trained model that analyzes changes in detected values obtained from a given vehicle within an operational time period, against a range of operational values, collected from different vehicles and/or the given vehicle, for the respective PHY parameter, to determine that the cable and/or the PHY linked thereto in the given vehicle may fail within a predetermined time period.

Early detection of cable failure in automotive networks

A network controller receives link metrics for network links on cables between network devices in a communication network. The link metrics include metrics indicative of crosstalk experienced by network links among the network links on cables. The network controller determines, based at least in part on the link metrics, respective link settings for respective network links among the network links. The link settings are determined to mitigate crosstalk experienced by the respective network links as a result of transmission of signals in at least some of the network links at baud rates that correspond to bandwidths that exceed maximum bandwidth ratings of respective cables of the corresponding ones of the network links. The network controller causes configuration of the respective network links based on the link settings to optimize performance across the plurality of network links in the communication network.

Network optimization for mitigation of crosstalk between network links

An apparatus for controlling a sensor over a network includes a transceiver and a processor. The transceiver is configured to communicate over a network. The processor is configured to receive or generate control data for controlling a sensor connected to the network, to generate a packet including (i) the control data and (ii) a trigger timestamp indicative of a future time at which the control data is to be provided to the sensor, and to transmit the packet using the transceiver over the network.

Synchronized control of sensors in an Ethernet network

An apparatus for controlling a sensor over a network includes a transceiver and a processor. The transceiver is configured to communicate over the network. The processor is configured to receive or generate control data for controlling a sensor, the sensor being connected to the network by a peer device. The processor is further configured to wake-up a link with the peer device in accordance with a schedule, and, during a time period in the schedule in which the link with the peer device is awake, to send to the peer device a packet comprising the control data.

Synchronized control of sensors in an ethernet network

A physical layer transceiver, for connecting a host device to a wireline channel medium that is divided into a total number of link segments, includes a host interface for coupling to a host device, a line interface for coupling to the wireline channel medium, and feed-forward equalization (FFE) circuitry operatively coupled to the line interface to add back, into a signal, components that were scattered in time. Respective individual filter segments are selectably configurable, by adjustment of respective delay lines, to correspond to respective individual link segments. The FFE circuitry also includes control circuitry configured to detect a signal energy peak in at least one particular link segment and, upon detection of the signal energy peak in the particular link segment, configure a respective one of the respective individual filter segments, by adjustment of a respective delay line, to correspond to the respective particular link segment.

Equalization in high-speed data channel having sparse impulse response

A transmitter transmits a first signal via a first cable at a first baud rate. A receiver receives a second signal via the first cable concurrently with transmitting the first signal via the first cable. The second signal is transmitted by another device at a second baud. rate that is lower than both i) the first baud rate and ii) a third baud rate at which a third signal is being transmitted in a second cable that causes crosstalk in the second signal being received via the first cable. Reception of the second signal at the second baud rate that is lower than the third baud rate facilitates mitigation of the crosstalk in the second signal caused by transmission of the third signal in the second cable at the third baud rate.

A method of operating an Ethernet transceiver includes initializing the Ethernet transceiver during a training mode of operation by monitoring background link operating characteristics with on-chip circuitry during a non-data-transfer interval to establish a baseline alien crosstalk value. Training data is then transmitted at a first transmit power level and first data rate to a link partner during a data transfer interval. The link is monitored with the on-chip circuitry during the data transfer interval to detect feedback indicating alien crosstalk effects to neighboring Ethernet links due to the transmitting. The first data rate and/or first transmit power level is then adjusted to an adjusted second data rate and/or second transmit power level based on the feedback. The Ethernet transceiver is then operated in a normal data transfer mode utilizing the adjusted second data rate and/or transmit power level.

Data rate and transmit power adjustments for data transmission over an ethernet link based on detected crosstalk

A network switch includes a plurality of Ethernet ports having their respective Physical (PHY) Layers interconnected via a common interface local to the network switch. The common interface passes local information among respective PHY layers of the Ethernet ports. One or more receivers receive for a first Ethernet port, over the common interface, information indicative of alien cross talk affecting at least one second Ethernet port of the network switch. A transmission attribute controller adjusts, based on the received information indicative of alien cross talk affecting the at least one second Ethernet port of the network switch, a first data rate and/or a first transmit power level to a second data rate and/or a second transmit power level for transmitting data to a remote network device. A first transmitter transmits data via the first Ethernet port according to the second data rate and/or the second transmit power level.
