An isolated nucleic acid molecule associated with human granulocytic ehrlichiosis is provided. Also provided are methods to detect the presence of the nucleic acid molecule, and antibodies specific for the polypeptide encoded by the nucleic acid molecule, in a sample derived from a mammal.

Methods to detect granulocytic ehrlichiosis

A method for long-term maintenance of intact nucleic acid is provided. The method comprises introducing a nucleic acid containing receptacle into a cavity of a storage device. The nucleic acid containing receptacle comprises an amount of isolated vertebrate nucleic acid in a cavity of the receptacle, wherein either the receptacle or storage device is formed of a natural material. The nucleic acid is retained in the cavity by a fastener. A sealant is introduced into the aperture of the cavity of the device to form a nucleic acid storage device.

Method for preservation of nucleic acids

A method for detecting in a biological sample the presence of Lyme-disease causing spirochetes using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). This method includes the steps of: isolating DNA from the biological sample; amplifying the isolated DNA under hybridizing conditions with a primer pair that targets portions of extrachromosomal linear plasmid gene encoding outer surface protein A (OspA) or outer surface protein B (OspB) of the Lyme-disease causing spirochetes, probing the amplified DNA under hybridizing conditions with a labeled gene probe; and detecting the labeled gene probe that hybridized to the amplified DNA of the Lyme-disease causing spirochetes.

PCR detection of Borrelia burgdorferi

The present invention provides a method for detecting B. burgdorferi infection utilizing an antigen preparation lacking a detectable level of outer surface protein A (OspA). The antigen preparation is made from an isolate of B. burgdorferi that lacks the plasmid encoding outer surface protein A (OspA). The method of the invention discriminates B. burgdorferi infection from OspA vaccination.

Method for detecting B. burgdorferi infection

A method is provided for detecting M. tuberculosis or mutants thereof, particularly rifampin-resistant MTB, in a biological sample comprising: isolating DNA from the biological sample; amplifying the isolated DNA under hybridizing conditions with a primer set that targets portions of the gene encoding rpoB; wherein the pimer set comprises at least one primer that hybridizes under hybridizing conditions to at least one signature nucleotide for M. tuberculosis; and isolating and sequencing the amplified DNA to determine the presence or absence of M. tuberculosis or mutants thereof.
