Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIFs) characterized by organic ligands consisting of imidazole ligands that are either essentially all 2-chloroimidazole ligands or essentially all 2-bromoimidazole ligands are disclosed. Methods for separating propane and propene with the ZIFs of the present invention, as well as other ZIFs, are also disclosed.

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks for kinetic separation of propane and propene

The present invention is related to a method for kinetically separating a light hydrocarbon mixture comprising at least two components by preferentially adsorbing a first component on a zeolite adsorbent comprising 8-member rings of tetrahedra as the pore opening controlling hydrocarbon diffusion and alkali metal cations balancing a framework charge, wherein a second component is not preferentially adsorbed. The novel process comprises contacting the light hydrocarbon mixture with a zeolite adsorbent having a SiO/AlOratio greater than about 50 and less than 200 and further having a diffusion rate at least 50 times greater for the first component as compared to the second component, and then recovering at least one of the first component or the second component.

Light hydrocarbon separation using 8-member ring zeolites

There is provided a substantially binder-free catalytic molecular sieve which has been modified by being ex situ selectivated with a silicon compound. The ex situ selectivation involves exposing the molecular sieve to at least two silicon impregnation sequences, each sequence comprising an impregnation with a silicon compound followed by calcination. The catalyst may be used in a hydrocarbon conversion process, such as toluene disproportionation.

Binderless ex situ selectivated zeolite catalyst

There is provided a process for converting methanol and/or dimethyl ether to a product containing C to C olefins which comprises the step of contacting a feed which contains methanol and/or dimethyl ether with a catalyst comprising a porous crystalline material. The contacting is conducted in the presence of a cofed aromatic compound under conversion conditions including a temperature of about 350&deg; C. to about 550&deg; C. and a methanol and/or dimethyl ether partial pressure less than or equal to 50 psia (345 kPa). The porous crystalline material used in the catalyst has a pore size greater than the critical diameter of the aromatic compound and a Diffusion Parameter for 2,2-dimethylbutane of about 0.1 to about 26 sec when measured at a temperature of 120&deg; C. and a 2,2- dimethylbutane pressure of 60 torr (8 kPa), and the aromatic compound is capable of alkylation by the methanol and/or dimethyl ether under said conversion conditions.

Process for producing chemicals from oxygenate

There is provided a process for the selective production of para-xylene which comprises reacting toluene with methanol in the presence of a catalyst comprising a porous crystalline material having a Diffusion Parameter for 2,2 dimethylbutane of about 0.1-15 sec when measured at a temperature of 120&deg; C. and a 2,2 dimethylbutane pressure of 60 torr (8 kPa). The porous crystalline material is preferably a medium-pore zeolite, particularly ZSM-5, which has been severely steamed at a temperature of at least 950&deg; C. The porous crystalline material is preferably combined with at least one oxide modifier, preferably including phosphorus, to control reduction of the micropore volume of the material during the steaming step.

Selective para-xylene production by toluene methylation

A method of selectively adsorbing propylene in mixtures of propylene/propane and propylene/olefins through the use of zeolites having structures with a maximum of 8-member rings of tetraheda controlling the diffusion rate. Suitable zeolite adsorbents are those having the CHA and ITE structure types. Other 8-member ring zeolites, including aluminosilicates, with a Si:Al molar ratio of at least about 200 and having substantially no free acid are also suitable adsorbents.

There is provided a catalyst and a process for converting methanol or dimethyl ether to a product containing C.sub.2 to C.sub.4 olefins. The catalyst comprises a porous crystalline material having a Diffusion Parameter for 2,2-dimethylbutane of about 0.1-20 sec.sup.-1 when measured at a temperature of 120.degree. C. and a 2,2-dimethylbutane pressure of 60 torr (8 kPa). In addition, the catalyst is characterized by a hydrothermal stability such that, after steaming the catalyst at 1025.degree. C. for 45 minutes in 1 atmosphere steam, the catalyst exhibits a methanol conversion activity of at least 50% when contacted with methanol at a methanol partial pressure of 1 atmosphere, a temperature of 430.degree. C. and 0.5 WHSV. The porous crystalline material is preferably a medium-pore zeolite, particularly ZSM-5, which contains phosphorus and has been severely steamed at a temperature of at least 950.degree. C.

Catalyst and process for converting methanol to hydrocarbons

There is provided a process for converting methanol and/or dimethyl ether to a product containing C.sub.2 to C.sub.4 olefins which comprises the step of contacting a feed which contains methanol and/or dimethyl ether with a catalyst comprising a porous crystalline material, said contacting step being conducted in the presence of an aromatic compound under conversion conditions including a temperature of 350.degree. C. to 480.degree. C. and a methanol partial pressure in excess of 10 psia (70 kPa), said porous crystalline material having a pore size greater than the critical diameter of the aromatic compound and the aromatic compound being capable of alkylation by the methanol and/or dimethyl ether under said conversion conditions.

Para-xylene is produced by toluene methylation by charging toluene and a methylating agent to a fluidized bed of catalyst at a rate sufficient to maintain the fluidized bed in a turbulent sub-transport flow regime, reacting the toluene with the methylating agent, and recovering para-xylene from the fluidized bed. The fluidizable catalyst is a microporous material having a Constraint Index of about 1 to about 12. The relative concentration of the catalyst particles having a major dimension of less than 40 microns is controlled at between about 5 and 35 weight percent. The catalyst particles have an apparent particle density of about 0.9 to 1.6 grams per cubic centimeter, a size range of about 1 to 150 microns, and average particle size of about 20 to 100 microns.

Fluid bed process for para-xylene production

There is provided a process for the alkylation of toluene with ethylene to selectively produce para-ethyltoluene over a catalyst which has been selectivated by multiple treatments with a siliceous material.

Toluene alkylation with ethylene to produce para-ethyloluene

A process for ethylbenzene production that involves contacting a hydrocarbon feedstream including benzene and ethylene, under alkylation conditions, with a catalytic molecular sieve which has been modified by being ex situ selectivated with a silicon compound. The ex situ selectivation involves exposing the molecular sieve to at least two selectivation sequences, each selectivation sequence comprising contacting the catalyst with a silicon compound followed by calcination. The modified catalyst used in the process may also be steamed. Optionally, the modified catalyst may be trim-selectivated.

Ethylbenzene production process with ex situ selectivated zeolite

A mixture of aromatic hydrocarbons, comprising ethylbenzene and at least one xylene, is treated to convert the ethylbenzene to compounds that may be removed from the aromatic hydrocarbon stream and to isomerize any xylenes present. The ethylbenzene conversion catalyst is one that is effective for ethylbenzene conversion with minimal xylene loss, e.g., a silica bound intermediate pore size zeolite that has been selectivated. The xylene isomerization catalyst is one which is effective to catalyze xylene isomerization. Each of the catalysts of this invention may contain one or more hydrogenation or dehydrogenation components.
