Contemplated compositions and methods are directed to the use of a proteinase to reduce capsaicin-induced pain sensation in a mammal. Preferably, the proteinase comprises a bromelain preparation in a liquid formulation for topical or enteral administration. In additional aspects of the inventive subject matter, a proteinase inhibitor is present in pepper spray to avoid inactivation of capsaicin by a proteinase.

In one embodiment, an information signal is stored in magnetic ink. In another embodiment, a magnetic ink encoding stylus includes a magnetic ink write head. In a further embodiment, a computer system includes a magnetic ink encoding stylus coupled to a computer via an external bus.

One aspect of the invention involves the output of a radio frequency (RF) identification tag by a writing instrument to indicate ink color or another characteristic associated with a line style parameter of the writing instrument. The RF identification tag is a wireless signal that uniquely identifies the line style parameters, such as physical-ink or virtual-ink color, produced when using the writing instrument. A writing tablet receives the RF identification tag and signals a computing device, responsible for displaying graphical representations made on the writing tablet, to display a portion of the graphical representation formed by that writing instrument with the characteristics of the line style parameters specified by the RF identification tag.

One aspect of the invention involves a thermal image generation device comprising a casing forming an interior cavity. One surface of the casing includes a screen with thermochromic material attached to a bottom surface of the screen. The casing houses at least one thermal transfer element movable over regions of the thermochromic material to alter a temperature at the regions from a steady-state, ambient temperature. Such temperature alterations temporarily cause a color variation to the thermochromic material until the regions of the thermochromic material return to the ambient temperature.

A physical element may be caused to appear to interact with an image displayed on a computer display screen. The position of the element with respect to the display screen may be determined automatically. The user can then manipulate the element to cause an image, which may appear to be connected to the element, to be altered. Therefore, the user gets the impression that the element is capable of interacting and altering an image displayed on the display screen.

Physically interacting with a processor-based display

Toner xerographically adhered to a material, such as a sheet of paper, may be removed using a solvent-based or solventless approach. The application of ultrasonic tamping, scraping and brushing may aid in removing toner particles. In a solvent-based approach, a solvent may be applied generally or the solvent may be targeted specifically to the toner covered portions of the material to loosen the adhesive securement of the toner to the material. Thereafter, the toner is subjected to a mechanical abrasion using ultrasonic and physical agitation to cause flaking of the toner.

A booster lens may be used with a conventional or electronic microscope by positioning the booster lens on top of a specimen holder. With limited or no additional focusing, greater magnification may be achieved by augmenting the magnification possible with the optics available with the microscope itself.

A 3D encoder includes a body having several pin cavities. Several pins are also provided, wherein each pin is located within one of the pin cavities and wherein each pin is capable of sliding movement within its pin cavity. Each of the pins is capable of being displaced by contact with a surface of a 3D object to be encoded. A sensing mechanism is provided to determine an amount by which each of the pins is displaced due to contact between that pin and the surface of the 3D object. A computer can be used to translate displacement data into a 3D mapping representative of the 3D object being encoded. A method of creating a computerized representation of a 3D object is also provided and includes placing a 3D object in communication with a plurality of pins to deflect a position of each of the pins contacting the 3D object in an amount corresponding to a shape of a surface of the 3D object. An amount of displacement of each of the pins is then determined and computer data representative of the shape of the surface of the 3D object can be generated based on the displacement data.

A material that phosphoresces may be controlled and the phosphorescence may be terminated when desired. A phosphorescing material may be exposed to an energy source that causes the material to stop phosphorescing. Thus, a pattern may be written on a surface, which is phosphorescing using a coherent energy source. The written pattern, represented by darkened regions, may be recognized by users as a symbol, a graphics or text.

A multi-axis potentiometer according to this invention is capable of determining actuator movement along multiple axes. The potentiometer includes a hollow, semi-spherical shell lined internally with a resistive element. Electrical contacts are attached across from each other along the resistive element near an opening of the shell to supply a source voltage or current to the resistive element. A pair of sensors are arranged on the end of an armature to contact the resistive element. The sensors in the end of the armature are used to sense voltage or current levels at the points where they contact the resistive element. These voltage or current levels are used to determine spherical coordinates corresponding to the location of the contact point and to determine an angle of rotation of the armature relative to the resistive element. A slidable handle can further be provided to a stem of the armature. The slidable handle contains a sensor to contact a resistive element located on the stem of the armature. A source voltage or current is applied to the resistive element and the handle sensor senses a voltage or current level at a contact point between the handle sensor and the resistive element. This voltage or current level can then be used to determine a position of the handle relative to the stem, corresponding to an elevation of the handle.

An active rebound circuit has a device that assists users lift their finger upward to relieve some repetitive motion stress. The device is configured to respond with a rebound force when a user's finger applies a particular force to the device. The rebound force is sufficient to provide substantial reduction in work expended in moving the finger in the opposite direction to the particular force applied by the user's finger.

A microphone may use boundary layer technology in concert with a concave reflector to produce improved sensitivity. The concave reflector may be arranged with respect to a boundary layer creating surface such that the sound waves are concentrated at the boundary layer creating surface. Thus, an intense compression layer is formed proximate to the boundary layer creating surface. A transducer may arranged in opposition to the boundary layer creating surface to convert the boundary layer energy into an electrical signal.
