A propeller, impeller or mixer comprising at least one blade, the blade having a suction surface and a pressure surface which extend from a leading edge to a trailing edge of the blade and a radially-outer tip region, wherein five to one hundred duct openings are provided extending through the at least one blade from the pressure surface to the suction surface, the duct openings being grouped in the tip region of the blade.

An outlet guide vane for a turbofan engine, which results in reduced noise. The outlet guide vane may comprise an aerofoil, the aerofoil comprising at least porous section, wherein the at least one channel or porous section is positioned near the leading edge of the aerofoil.

Apparatus and method for propelling a watercraft. An oar has a blade and a shaft, the blade having a front side and a back side, the shaft having a longitudinal axis. The blade includes a plurality of openings which pass from the front side to the back side of the blade. In some cases, the openings are slit shaped openings oriented substantially perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis of the shaft. In other cases, the smallest lateral dimension of each opening is 5 mm or less. The openings may influence the flow around the blade so that the blade is more efficient, and thus may produce more useful work in moving a boat than a solid blade with no openings.

A check weighing system is provided which can check weigh samples ( ) on a production line. The check weighing system comprises a magnet ( ) for creating a static magnetic field over an interrogation zone for creating a net magnetisation within a sample ( ) located within the interrogation zone and an RF coil for applying an alternating magnetic field over the interrogation zone for causing excitation of the sample ( ) within the interrogation zone according to the principles of NMR. The check weighing system also comprises a sensor for sensing the energy emitted as the sample relaxes back to an equilibrium state after excitation as the samples pass through the interrogation zone on a conveyor belt ( ) forming part of the production line. The sensed signal from the sample ( ) is then compared with calibration data which is obtained for at least one similar sample of known mass, which calibration data relates the mass of the similar sample to the corresponding signal output by the sensor, to provide the indication of the mass of the sample.
