An easily applied device is described that protects the soft tissues inside of the mouth from abrasion by orthodontic braces. The device consists of a putty-like, moldable material that may be pressed onto and into and molded about the brackets and wires of orthodontic braces, and a plasticized and dehydrated or partially dehydrated hydrogel-forming layer on those surfaces of the device that contact the braces and teeth so as to absorb saliva and dry to some extent the surfaces to which the device is pressed and to offer initial adhesion of the device to the teeth and/or braces.

Orthodontic protection device

An orthodontic protection device including: a protective layer shaped sized to fit over the facial surface of at least one tooth of a human and any orthodontic appliances affixed to the facial surfaces of the at least one tooth, wherein the protective layer includes a moldable material; and an adhesive layer including at least one hygroscopic polymeric material on a facial surface of the protective layer.

A protective shield is removably mounted over an orthodontic appliance in a user's mouth and includes an outer resilient compressible material layer joined to an inner adhesive layer. The shield is flexible for easy installation over all exposed surfaces of the orthodontic appliance; but is removable after a period of use. The outer resilient material layer of the shield can be formed of closed cell foam or a gelatinous material.
