A network method and apparatus configured to increase bandwidth efficiency using multiple packets cells ('MPC') is disclosed. MPC, in one embodiment, includes a header, a payload, a first cell packet indicator ('CPI') and a second CPI. The first CPI includes a first start of packet (&#x201c;SOP&#x201d;) field, a first end of packet (&#x201c;EOP&#x201d;) field, and a first length field. The first SOP field is used to indicate that the payload contains the first portion of a first packet and the first EOP field indicates that the payload contains the last portion of the first packet. The first length field indicates total number of bytes associated with the first packet that are stored in the payload. Similarly, the second CPI includes a second SOP field, a second EOP field, and a second length field, and it is used to track the second packet.

Methods and apparatus for mapping data packets to a multi-packets cell

A communication system includes a first ingress content processor that receives information associated with a first traffic type. The first ingress content processor places the information associated with the first traffic type into a system cell having a common system cell format. A second ingress content processor receives information associated with a second traffic type. The second ingress content processor places the information associated with the second traffic type into a system cell having the common system cell format. A switch fabric receives system cells from the first and second ingress content processors. System cells from the first ingress content processor are automatically sent to the switch fabric while system cells from the second ingress content processor are required to be scheduled before being sent to the switch fabric. The switch fabric separately queues system cells carrying payloads associated with the first traffic type from system cells carrying payloads associated with the second traffic type. The switch fabric services system cells carrying payloads associated with the first traffic type prior to servicing system cells carrying payloads associated with the second traffic type.

System and method for communicating data using a common switch fabric

Systems and methods for cell based wrapped wave front arbiter (WWFA) with bandwidth reservation are disclosed. The method for reserving bandwidth of a given priority using the WWFA for arbitrating bandwidth among virtual links between input and output ports, each virtual link supporting one or more priorities and corresponding to an arbitration unit (AU) of the WWFA generally comprises performing at least one arbitration pass of a wave front of the WWFA where AUs having a reserved bandwidth request of a given priority and reserved bandwidth credit of the given priority compete for the bandwidth associated with the wave front, and where AUs not having a reserved bandwidth request of the given priority and reserved bandwidth credit of the given priority do not compete for the bandwidth, and performing at least one subsequent arbitration pass where AUs having a reserved bandwidth request of the given priority compete for the bandwidth.
