A multifunction device includes a multifunction controller, a first interface for receiving input data from a document source and a second interface for outputting processed input data to at least one printer, and a third interface for coupling to a global data communications network for receiving current document data, as well as up to date recipient contact information therefrom. A graphical user interface is provided to control the operation of the multifunction device, including controlling access to and searching of remote databases coupled to the global data communications network. The remote databases can include, by example, a database of forms, a security database, and a directory database. The graphical user interface can control the operation of the multifunction device for accessing and searching a database containing the recipient contact information for sending at least one of a facsimile or an e-mail that contains processed input data. The global data communications network can be the Internet, and at least one of the databases can be a web site containing the desired information, such as a database of current forms. The multifunction device can also include at least one local database that stores information that duplicates at least a portion of the information stored in the remote databases, where the at least one local database is accessible by the multifunction controller.

Remote database support in a multifunction office device

A multifunction device includes a multifunction controller, a first interface for receiving input data from a document source and a second interface for outputting processed input data to at least one printer, and a third interface for coupling to a global data communications network for receiving current document data, as well as up to date recipient contact information therefrom. An interface is provided to control the operation of the multifunction device, including controlling access to and searching of remote databases coupled to the global data communications network. The remote databases can include, by example, a database of forms, a security database, and a directory database. The interface can control the operation of the multifunction device for accessing and searching a database containing the recipient contact information for sending at least one of a facsimile or an e-mail that contains processed input data.

A multifunction, communication device including a user recognition device for obtaining user identifying data from a user, an interface for receiving the user identifying data from the user recognition device, a memory for containing personal user contact data associated with the user, and a controller having a user interface for controlling the operation of the communication device by using the personal user contact data associated with the user in performing at least one function of the communication device. Control of the operation of the multifunction communication device includes obtaining user identifying data from the user, associating the user identifying data with the user's personal user contact data located in a memory, and performing a function of the communication device using the personal user contact data of the user.

User recognition support for multifunction office device

A multifunction device includes a multifunction controller, a first interface for receiving input data from at least one scanner and a second interface for outputting processed input data to at least one printer, wherein the first interface and the second interface are each a standard interface. In a presently preferred embodiment the first interface is comprised of a SCSI interface. The multifunction device further includes a graphical user interface for controlling the operation of the multifunction device, including setting operational parameters for the at least one scanner and the at least one printer. Other interfaces are also provided, including one for coupling to a facsimile device for outputting processed input data to the facsimile device, and another interface for coupling to an e-mail port for outputting processed input data to the e-mail port. Another interface is for coupling to a global data communications network, such as the Internet, for receiving document data as well as recipient contact information therefrom.

Fully modular multifunction device

Software components such as objects, applications and computational blocks are linked through a data flow manager and an interface that facilitate data exchange between the components. The interface defines a communication protocol. Components that comply with the protocol can share data, even if such components are associated with unrelated applications. Non-compliant components can be paired with translation objects or controlled by scripts to allow such non-compliant components to be linked to compliant components for data sharing. The data flow manager controls data exchange by determining which components are prepared to share data, and then prompting only prepared components to share data. Data exchange is executed in discrete steps.

Manipulation and coupling of object oriented components

A video distribution management system utilizes a shared video library and a wide area network to deliver video files to local caches on the local area networks serving a subset of local viewing stations. A combination of direct local cache access, scheduled future local cache access and speed match distribution of video files makes the overall system both efficient and economical. In particular, a locally stored preface of a video file can be immediately viewed on the local area network while the balance of the video file is transmitted from the remote video library.
