A network-based CODEC (coder-decoder) includes an echo canceler. This CODEC recognizes the presence of a data call by detecting predefined signaling portions of a modem handshaking process. For each detected data call, the CODEC uses a stored channel model for performing echo cancellation during the data call. The CODEC trains off-line during selected segments of the modem call and then stores the new channel model for use in a future data call.

A system for, and method of, detecting a customer premises equipment ('CPE') alerting signal ('CAS') on a telephone line that is carrying near-end audio traffic and CPE embodying the same. The system includes: (1) an echo cancellation circuit, coupled to the telephone line, that detects an outbound component of the near-end audio traffic and produces, in response thereto, an echo canceling signal, (2) a combinatorial circuit, coupled to the telephone line and the echo cancellation circuit, that applies the echo canceling signal to an inbound component of the near-end audio traffic to produce a resulting signal having the near-end audio traffic substantially removed therefrom and (3) a CAS detector, coupled to the combinatorial circuit, that detects the CAS in the resulting signal, the echo cancellation circuit and the combinatorial circuit cooperating to increase the reliability of the CAS detector.

Acoustic echos are canceled by employing a first echo canceler having a comparatively long first impulse response synthesis capability which is connected between a transmit path and receive path for generating a first error signal and for canceling echo signals in the transmit path, and at least a second echo canceler having a comparatively short second impulse response synthesis capability connected in parallel with the first echo canceler between the transmit and the receive path. The second echo canceler is supplied with the first error signal from the first echo canceler and is adaptively operating simultaneously with but independent of the first echo canceler to further cancel echos in the transmit path. Specifically, the first echo canceler is intended to capture the substantially stationary and any slowly varying components of the echo path impulse response, and the second echo canceler is intended to capture the more time varying, i.e., dynamically varying, component of the echo path impulse response.

In accordance with an embodiment of the invention, a data converter is disclosed employing at least one minimum phase FIR filter. The data converter includes an analog-to-digital converter for converting an incoming analog signal into a plurality of digital signal samples, followed by a minimum phase FIR filter to filter the digital signal samples. Alternatively, the data converter includes a digital-to-analog converter preceded by a minimum phase FIR filter to filter a plurality of digital signal samples that are converted into an analog signal by the digital-to-analog converter. The data converter may include both analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion. In a preferred embodiment, the minimum phase FIR filter is an optimum minimum phase FIR filter. A method for precisely calculating the filter coefficients of an optimum minimum phase FIR filter is also disclosed.

The present invention is a quantization-level-sampling (QLS) modem which includes means for separately equalizing each loop of an end-to-end digital telephone system network connection by employing a plurality of transmitter filters and a plurality of receiver filters in such a way that, in the direction of transmission from modem to central office, the voltage samples seen by the coder/decoder stations are equivalent to the network quantization levels transmitted by the modem, and in the direction of transmission from central office to modem, the voltage samples seen by the modem are equivalent to the network quantization levels encoded by the coder/decoder stations. The invention also includes a QLS modem communications system which includes the aforesaid digital telephone system network and a plurality of QLS modems. In preferred embodiments, an adaptation service unit within the telephone system network assists in the determination of the settings of the transmitter and receiver filters.

The problem of noise enhancement is eliminated in communications systems by predistorting the amplitude of the transmitted information signal in a manner which compensates for the amplitude distortion introduced in a portion of the communications channel. In the disclosed embodiments, the communications system includes two signal transceivers which communicate with one another through a communications channel. The communications channel includes two-wire subscriber loops adjacent to each signal transceiver with a four-wire transmission path disposed between the subscriber loops. Each transceiver transmits an information signal which, depending on the system noise characteristics, is predistorted to compensate for all or a portion of the amplitude distortion introduced in a subscriber loop adjacent to that signal transceiver. The predistortion necessary to provide such compensation is determined at each transceiver in response to received signals at that transceiver.

In accordance with the present invention, local loop testing in an echo canceller based modem is provided in a manner in which proper operation of both the receiver and echo canceller can be assessed simultaneously. Specifically, the modem includes means for generating data and interfering symbol sequences and for applying the interfering sequence to both the echo canceller and the modem transmitter, while applying the data sequence only to either the transmitter or the echo canceller. During closed loop testing, the modem connection to the transmission line is opened, and a portion of the output of the modem transmitter is applied to the modem receiver via a leakage path through the hybrid. The received symbol is subtracted from the echo canceller output, resulting in application to the receiver of only a version of the data symbol sequence. Advanced knowledge of the characteristics of the data symbol sequence allows proper receiver operation to be verified.

The present invention relates to a technique for recovering each of an entire analog speech signal and a modulated data signal simultaneously received over a transmission channel such as a common analog telephone speech channel. In the received composite signal, the entire modulated data signal is multiplexed within the normal analog speech signal frequency band where the speech is present and its signal power density characteristic is at a low level. Separation of the speech and data signals at the receiver is effected by recovering the modulation carrier frequency and demodulating the received signal to recover the data signal. The data signal is then (a) remodulated with the recovered carrier, (b) modified to cancel phase jitter and frequency offset errors detected during the data demodulating process and (c) convolved with an arbitrary channel impulse response in an adaptive filter whose output signal is subtracted from the received composite data and speech signal to generate the recovered speech signal. To improve the recovered speech signal, a least mean square algorithm is used to update the arbitrary channel impulse response output signal of the adaptive filter.
