Embodiments are directed to synchronizing files between client devices utilizing different file systems with different filename restrictions. Generally speaking, a server of a cloud-based storage environment can, upon generation of a file or receiving a file from a first client device, detect any 'illegal' characters therein, i.e., characters that are predefined by a file system of a second client device of the environment as being impermissible for use in a filename, and substitute a replacement character for those illegal characters. This replacement character can comprise a character that is permissible by the file system of both the first and second client devices, thereby allowing synchronization and access. Additionally, the server(s) can identify the original filename from the first client device and substitute the replacement characters back to the original filename when the file is being accessed by or synchronized with the first client device.

Embodiments of the disclosure provide systems and methods for detecting and providing warnings of potential data loss on termination of a client application of a cloud-based storage system. According to one embodiment, an attempt to log out or otherwise terminate the cloud services client application can be detected and local files at risk of losing data can be identified. A warning can then be presented to the user. For example, a warning can be presented on a display of the client device identifying local files at risk of data loss for various reasons such as those files that are still open by an application, files that are in the process of, but not yet finished, being synchronized, and files that cannot be synchronized. The user can then be given the option to continue or can cancel the termination and attempt to remedy the situation(s) creating the risk of data loss.

Warning for potential loss of data on logout

Enterprise administrators in a cloud-based environment including a cloud-based server and a repository can selectively impose permissions on items (e.g., files and folders) marked for synchronization ('sync items'). The sync items can be synchronized with the client devices of users by downloading the items along with the permission attributes from the cloud-based server. However, the permissions on those sync items means that any unpermitted changes to the local copies of the sync items do not get uploaded to the cloud-based server. A synchronization client on the client devices detects any changes made locally to the sync items that are not consistent with the permission attributes, and repairs those changes so that the sync items are restored to their most recent states. This ensures that any unauthorized changes made to sync items remain local and do not propagate by the synchronization process to other users.

Synchronization of permissioned content in cloud-based environments

Embodiments of the present disclosure include systems and methods for implementing an Iconizer in a cloud-based platform such as cloud based platform (e.g., cloud-based collaboration platform or cloud-based platform providing collaborative and/or file sharing services). The iconizer can facilitate the display on a graphical user interface (GUI) of certain features of the storage operation and synchronization to a user. Some embodiments contemplate methods for representing Unicode text in the file system operations in either Normal Form Composed (NFC) or Normal Form Decomposed (NFD). Various disclosed embodiments facilitate operations using either or both formats, or a combination of the two.

Systems and methods for providing shell communication in a cloud-based platform

A data-driven system for fast response to security vulnerability, in one example embodiment, comprises a request detector, a content type evaluator, and a presentation module. A request detector may be configured to detect a request to display content. A content type evaluator may be configured to determine a type of the requested content. A presentation module may be configured to selectively display the requested content based on the determined type of the requested content. The content type evaluator and the presentation module may utilize a data file that stores information related to potential vulnerabilities associated with a content viewing application. Example data file may be an XML file.

A method and apparatus for navigating amongst search results. In one embodiment, the method receives a item to search within a document and stores a start location representing the position within the document at the time the item is received. The method searches the document for instances of the item and stores, as an index, at least one item location within the document for each instance of the item. A search result representing a match between the item and content in the document is displayed and, upon selecting to return to the start location at any time while displaying the search result, returning to the start location to display at least a portion of the document at the start location.

Method and apparatus for improved navigation among search results

A system installs an application by identifying a file set indicating files accessed during operation of the application. The system identifies a set of available storage areas that are accessible to a computerized device, and that are capable of storing files in the file set. The system identifies a performance metric associated with each of the storage areas in the set of available storage areas, and positions files from the file set into at least one storage area of the set of available storage areas. The files are positioned based on the performance metrics associated with the one storage area.

Methods and apparatus for optimizing installation location of software

Disclosed herein are methods for efficient loading of extensions or 'plug ins' into a host software program. In a preferred embodiment, extensions registered with the host software program are loaded when the host program is first initialized. During their loading, changes that the various extensions make to the host program are recorded in a cache file, including graphical changes to the user interface and non-graphical changes. Later, when the host program is again initialized, the cache file is read in lieu of loading the extensions, with the affect that it appears to the user that the extensions' functionality are fully present in the host application, although in reality the extensions are not yet loaded. Instead, the extensions are loaded when and if they are called, either by the user or automatically by the computer. This saves time upon host program initialization as the extensions, once cached, need not be loaded until they are called.

Faster loading of extension-based applications using caching

Modification of source code reduces a launch time associated with an application program so that the application program more quickly responds to input from a user after startup. One technique of modifying source code includes converting globally defined variables in the source code to local static variables associated with respective newly created functions. Inclusion of the globally defined variables in the source code impacts application launch time because a compiler creates initialization code associated with the globally defined variables that must be run at launch time to initialize the variables in case they are used by functions in the application program. On the other hand, local static variables are initialized when the function that contains them is first called. Thus, use of local static variables in respective newly created functions in lieu of globally defined variables reduce application program launch time.
