A skin effect heating system for long pipelines includes a heater cable disposed in a ferromagnetic or other conductive heat tube. A semiconductive jacket contacts the inner surface of the heat tube, where the charge density of the return current carried by the heat tube is at its highest. The semiconductive jacket material has a resistivity that is sufficiently low to reduce or eliminate arcing events such as corona discharge by allowing accumulated charge on the heat tube to dissipate. The resistivity is also high enough to prevent the return current from flowing into or through the semiconductive outer layer, so that heat production capacity of the system is maximized.

A skin effect heating cable used to form a heat tracing circuit for heating a production pipe carrying process media. The skin effect heating cable includes a heating tube which includes a conductor, an insulating layer wrapped around the conductor and a dielectric fluid disposed between the insulating layer and the inner wall of the heating tube. The dielectric fluid increases the heat transfer characteristic from the conductor to the heating tube while providing mechanical load relief to the cable.

Skin effect heating system having improved heat transfer and wire support characteristics

Embodiments of the invention provide systems and methods for heating a wellbore environment. One or more electric heating cables are attached to an elongated support member, such as a wire rope, so that the support member receives and relieves the heating cables of a mechanical load. The attachment may be with two-piece clamps spaced at regular intervals along the support member. The heating cables and support member may be disposed in coiled tubing within the wellbore. The coiled tubing can be pressure-sealed and filled with a dielectric fluid. The heating cables and support member can be attached to a cable hang-off having a plurality of wedge-shaped slips that cooperate with a bowl to form a pinching member that grips the support member and suspends the support member and heating cables in the wellbore. The methods include methods for manufacturing and installing the heating apparatus.

Downhole wellbore heating system and method

A subterranean electro-thermal heating system including one or more heater cable sections extending through one or more heat target regions of a subterranean environment and one or more cold lead sections coupled to the heater cable section(s) and extending through one or more non-target regions of the subterranean environment. A cold lead section delivers electrical power to a heater cable section but generates less heat than the heater cable section. The heater cable section(s) are arranged to deliver thermal input to one or more localized areas in the subterranean environment to vaporize a liquid, e.g. water.
