Electric submersible well pumping systems operable in well temperatures of above about 180&#xb0; C. (356&#xb0; F.) utilize high temperature electrical insulation. The electrical insulation includes E-base polyimide films or perfluoropolymer TE films on various components. The insulation films are employed around magnet wires that are threaded through slots in the stator. Slot insulation of E-base polyimide or perfluoropolymer TE film surrounds the magnet wires in the stator slots. Sheets of E-base polyimide or perfluoropolymer TE film extend around and between phase loops of the magnet wire at the lower end of the stator. The motor contains a PAO oil having additives to dissipate acid generated by epoxy used in the motor.

An electric motor has a housing with a plurality of stator discs. The discs have slots that align with one another, forming passages. A dielectric film tube inserts into the slots, each of the tubes having a continuous circumference. Each tube has a nonmeltable dielectric film layer of high temperature insulation. The dielectric film layer has overlapping edges and is bonded to a carrier layer of a meltable material. The tubes may be inserted into the slot passages by drawing a vacuum in the interior of each tube, causing it to collapse so that it can be readily inserted.

Conductors are placed in insulator which acts as a spacer/centralizer for the conductors, which are in turn mounted within tubing. The void spaces between the insulator and the tubing inside wall can be filled with a sealing material. Alternatively, the voids around the substantially centralized conductors can be used as flow channels for the transmission of fluid pressure to a remote location, such as downhole. The conductors are protected because they are kept away from the tubing wall and can be further protected by the addition of the sealing material.

An electrical cable for use in submersible well pumps in oil and gas well environments is provided having an electrical conductor core which is surrounded by an insulating layer of cross-linked polyethylene. A barrier layer surrounds the cross-linked polyethylene insulating layer. The barrier layer is impermeable to oil and other liquid hydrocarbons, but is permeable to low molecular gases. The barrier layer is preferably formed from a fluoropolymer and is surrounded by a polymeric protective layer. An adhesive layer attaches the barrier layer to the insulating layer.
