Equipment is provided for converting a phasor-domain model of a power system to a time-domain model. The equipment obtains the phasor-domain model and a raw file that represents a representable subset of parameters of the phasor-domain model. The equipment modifies the raw file as needed for the raw file to accurately represent the representable subset of parameters. The equipment generates a supplementary file that represents a non-representable subset of parameters of the phasor-domain model which is not representable by the raw file. The equipment also obtains a time-domain specific parameter file that represents parameters specific for modeling the power system in the time-domain. The equipment converts the phasor-domain model to the time-domain model, based on the raw file as modified, the supplementary file, and the time-domain specific parameter file. The equipment may also perform fault simulation-based quality verification of the time-domain model.

Techniques for using an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system for Utility Automation (UA) purposes in a utility distribution system are disclosed herein. In an AMI system, a metering node often includes a communications option board for connecting to a wide area network (WAN), which can be shared between the AMI system and a UA system. The metering node may be near other devices that can be controlled by a utility company to monitor and control components of the utility distribution system. A data packet is received in a communication device. The communication device determines whether the received data packet is formatted according to a first protocol employed by the AMI system. If so, then the data packet is forwarded to a first device in communication with the AMI system. If not, then the data packet is forwarded to a second device in communication with the UA system.

A load control system that communicates with existing automated meter reading communications systems to interrupt and shed loads at a customer location. The system includes a master controller that listens to communications between a utility meter and the reading system. The controller receives tier and/or pricing information and will instruct a load control unit to interrupt certain loads based on the information. In addition, the system may be employed as a load shedding system where a command may be forwarded to the master controller to disconnect loads based on action levels. The command may be sent via a TCP/IP communications system to a node in the reading system and the forwarded via a radio network to the master controller to reduce latency. Predictive shedding may be performed based on forecast loads.

A system and methods that enable a restoration scheme for power distribution systems that is independent of power distribution system component configuration, the number of power distribution system components, and component settings are provided. In a power distribution system, a number of intelligent reclosers having restoration control modules are deployed that execute a restoration scheme. The intelligent reclosers constantly poll cooperating power distribution lines to determine changes in current or voltage provided by the power distribution lines. In the event of a power distribution system fault, the reclosers act in accordance to a predefined restoration scheme to reanimate the unaffected portions of the failing power distribution system.

The invention describes a method, system, device, and computer-readable medium having computer-executable instructions for classifying faults on an electrical power line. A recloser trips on one phase for single-phase only fault conditions, or all phases for multi-phase fault conditions. During power delivery, the recloser monitors the three phases of a power line (e.g., phases A, B, and C). If a fault is detected on one phase, then a timer is started and subsequently decremented. If the timer finishes counting down while the fault is still present, then it is determined if any of the other two phases are timing a fault. If so, then all three phases are tripped; otherwise, only the faulted phase is tripped.

A protection setting group is stored in a memory accessible by the recloser controller, and contains a set of instructions for controlling the recloser based on the prevailing conditions. The prevailing conditions are continuously monitored, and the control of the recloser is based on the prevailing conditions and the protection setting group.

An automatic power restoration device has a modifiable end point. The end point is indicative of the operational parameters of the automatic power restoration device. A user can modify the end point and thus the operational parameters of the automatic power restoration device. The end point can be modified according to the protection characteristics of other fault protection devices within a power system.
