A power turbine speed control system for a turbo-shaft type gas turbine engine that has a gas generator compressor spool and a power turbine spool and drives an electrical generator that powers at least one electrical load by way of at least one electrical bus, comprises a power turbine controller that senses the rotary speed of the power turbine spool and generates at least one signal that changes the torque of the electrical generator in response to the sensed change in the rotary speed of the power turbine spool.

Power turbine speed control using electrical load following

An electrodynamic machine has a winding and a switching arrangement effectively dividing the winding into individually controllable portions. During a first operating condition, current flows through the entire winding in a manner controlled by the switching arrangement. In a second condition, the switching arrangement restricts current flow to only a portion of the winding. The second condition effectively reduces the inductive capacity of the winding.

Electrodynamic machine control

A torque tube assembly for transmitting rotational force from a first end to a second end includes a number n of concentric elongate torque tubes, where n is an odd integer greater than or equal to three. The concentric elongate torque tubes are connected for co-rotation. A serpentine thermal conduction path is defined between the first end of the torque tube assembly and the second end of the torque tube assembly, and includes at least a portion of each of the concentric elongate torque tubes.

Permanent magnet dynamoelectric machine with axially displaceable permanent magnet rotor assembly

A magnetic actuator core is provided for a radial bearing that supports a rotor for rotation about an axis. The magnetic actuator core includes a back iron, and a plurality of poles spaced circumferentially about the axis and extending radially from the back iron. Each of the poles has a taper wherein the circumferential width of the pole tapers from larger to smaller as the pole extends from the back iron.

Shaftless rotor construction

Losses in efficiency of operation of a dynamoelectric machine as a result of eddy current losses and poor coolant efficiency and/or disruption of the magnetic circuit in a rotor by coolant passages is avoided in a dynamoelectric machine including a stator (18) in which a rotor (16) is journaled. The rotor includes a stack (16) of thin laminations (17) made of a ferromagnetic material to define a rotor body. The rotor body includes a plurality of equally angularly spaced poles (58) separated by recesses (64). Coolant passages (76) located in the rotor at or just radially inward of the base (72) of each pole (58) and substantially radially outward of the rotational axis (56) of the rotor (14) to maximize cooling efficiency of the poles (58) without disrupting the magnetic circuit in the rotor. Slots (80) are placed in the tips (70) of the poles (58) of selected laminations (17) and extend generally radially inward to reduce eddy current losses.

Rotor for a dynamoelectric machine

An electromagnetic thrust bearing having reduced windage losses, improved structural integrity, and enhanced electromagnetic flux density. The present invention provides an electromagnetic thrust bearing having a first annular stator segment and a second annular stator segment joined thereto to define an annular electromagnetic coil chamber having an L-shaped cross-section. By employing first and second stator segments, the electromagnetic coil can be precision wound onto one segment without interference from the other segment, and then the two segments can be joined after the precision winding has been performed. The first segment is joined to the second segment at a location remote from the stator poles to thereby provide a more structurally sound assembly able to better withstand loads imposed thereon. The stator segment pole faces include axially extending lips to maximize electromagnetic flux density and thus load carrying capacity.

L-shaped magnetic thrust bearing

The hydraulic components of a cooling circuit for a dynamoelectric machine are eliminated in a totally air cooled dynamoelectric machine which includes a rotor (12) rotatable about an axis (14) and including a central stack (20) of ferrous laminations (22) defining a plurality of radially outwardly directed circumferentially spaced poles (132), spaced shaft ends (24,26) on the axis (14) and extending from opposite sides of the stack (20) and a first air passage (46) in the stack (20). Magnetic journal bearings (54,56) and a magnetic thrust bearing (58,60) are provided for the shaft segments (24,26) and impellers (62) are located on opposite sides of the stack (20). A stator (16) surrounds the rotor (12) and includes windings (76) connected by end turns (94) located exteriorally of the stator (16). Axial winding coolant passages (152,158) are provided adjacent the windings (76) in the stator and radial passages (70,72) are located in the rotor and the stator and in fluid communication with an outlet (74) from the housing. Rotor coolant passages (130) are located in the stack (20) and all of the passages receive air from the impellers (62).

Air cooled dynamoelectric machine

A magnetic bearing (10) is provided for supporting a rotor (12) for rotation about an axis (14). The magnetic bearing (10) includes a plurality of actuator cores (16) spaced circumferentially about the axis (14), and a plurality of non-magnetic spacers (18A, 18B). Each of the cores (16) has a pair of circumferentially spaced end surfaces (28). Each of the spacers (18A, 18B) is positioned between the end surfaces (28) of adjacent pairs of the cores (16) and has an interference fit with the end surfaces (28) to form a circumferentially preloaded ring (19) of the cores (16) and spacers (18A, 18B) centered on the axis (14). At least one of the non-magnetic spacers is a multi-piece assembly (18A) including a shim (32, 49) having a width selected to provide the circumferential preload within a predetermined range.

Magnetic bearing construction

A magnetic bearing system (24) supports a shaft (20). The bearing system (24) includes a magnetic rotor (34) and a stator element (36) positioned in proximity to the rotor (34). A plurality of first electromagnets (40, 41, 42) are mounted in the stator element (36). The first electromagnets (40, 41, 42) are of relatively large size to provide high load bearing capacity. A plurality of second electromagnets (44, 45, 46) are mounted in the shator element (36) in spaced relation with the first electromagnets (40, 41, 42), the second electromagnets (44, 45, 46) being of relatively small size to provide high frequency response. Displacement sensors (56, 57, 58) sense position of the shaft (20) relative to the stator element (36). A controller (60) is coupled to the displacement sensors (56, 57, 58) and the electromagnets (40, 41, 42, 44, 45, 46) for controlling current thereto. The controller (60) develops a first set of current signals to the first electromagnets (40, 41, 42) and a second set of current signals to the second electromagnets (44, 45, 46).
