An ultra-thin polarizing glass article having two polarizing glass layers separated by a non-polarizing central region. The polarizing glass layers contain stretched or elongated metal particles and the non-polarizing central region contains elongated or stretched metal halide particle. The polarizing article has a thickness less than 200 micrometers.

Ultra-thin glass polarizers and method of making same

A method for making a polarizing glass article is provided. The method includes first providing a precursor glass containing metal-halide particles. The precursor glass may be encased in a gas-permeable medium. Then, form at least a first polarizing layer and a non-polarizing region in the precursor glass. Bond the polarizing layer to a substrate and removing the non-polarizing region to expose the polarizing layer. Then, separate the first polarizing layer from the substrate to produce an ultra-thin polarizing glass article measuring less than or equal to about 200 &#x3bc;m in thickness. The method may further comprise cutting the polarizing layer into wafers.

A method for fabricating an integrated optical isolator includes depositing a wire grid material on a magneto-optical substrate and depositing a resist film on the wire grid material. The method further includes bringing a mold with a wire grid pattern on contact with the resist film and compressing the mold and resist film together so as to emboss the wire grid pattern in the resist film. The method further includes transferring the wire grid pattern in the resist film to the wire grid material on the magneto-optical substrate by etching.

A reflective polarzier for visible light wavelengths formed of a plurality of polarizer units. Each polarizer unit having a transparent, inorganic substrate with first and second opposing surfaces. The first surface is coated with a single layer of a dielectric material, and the second surface is coated with a layer of a highly reflective metal film or a dielectric material. The polarizer is configured to produce a &ldquo;quasi-straight path,&rdquo; such that a light ray exiting the substrate is substantially parallel with a corresponding, incident light ray entering the substrate. The polarizer exhibits polarization over the entire visible spectrum.

Inorganic visible light reflection polarizer

A method of producing a polarizing glass article that exhibits a broad band of high contrast polarizing properties in the infrared region of the radiation spectrum. The polarizing glass is phase-separated or exhibits photochromic properties based on silver, copper, or copper-cadmium halide crystals or a combination thereof, which are precipitated in the glass and having a size in the range of 200-5000 &angst;. The glass has a surface layer containing elongated silver, copper, or copper cadmium metal particles, or a mixture thereof. The method comprises subjecting the glass article to a time-temperature cycle in which the temperature is at least about 76&deg; C. or greater above the glass softening point, in a step to thermally form and precipitate large halide crystals, and elongated metallic particles under a stress of not over about 3000 psi, preferably not over about 2675 psi.

Method of making a polarizing glass

A process for making a plurality of vertically integrated optical components including providing a holding device with a plurality of holes, providing a polarizing glass having two polarization layers separated by a non-polarizing region, providing a plurality of optical fibers insulated by ferrules, inserting the fibers into the device, bonding the polarizing glass to the fibers and holding device, removing one of the polarization layers and the non-polarizing region to expose the other polarization layer thus forming an ultrathin polarizing glass, slicing the ultrathin glass at the ferrules to form a plurality of polarizer devices, separating the polarizing devices from the surrounding ultrathin glass to form a plurality of vertically integrated optical components, and removing the components from the holding device.

Process for making vertically integrated optical components

A component of a thermal processing apparatus for a fluid stream of hydrocarbons, a precursor glass for a glass-ceramic coating on such component, and a method of inhibiting deposition of a material, such as carbon, on a surface of the component.

This article is a glass substrate having a coating thereon. The coating strongly absorbs certain ultraviolet radiation. The preferred coating absorbs ultraviolet radiation at wavelengths ranging from 230 up to at least 280 nm while providing high transmission throughout a region of visible wavelengths. The preferred coating consisting essentially of three layers, wherein the first layer adjacent the substrate is a mixture of SiO,and TiO,; the second layer is TiO,and the third layer farthest from the substrate is SiO,.

Coated ultraviolet absorbing glass

This invention is directed to the formation of glass-ceramic articles which exhibit a yellow coloration in visible light and fluoresce with a yellow coloration while being exposed to ultraviolet radiation. The yellow coloration is produced through the incorporation of a color package comprising 0.05-0.5% V.sub.2 O.sub.5, 0.25-5% CeO.sub.2, and 0.1-1% Tb.sub.2 O.sub.3. When the glass-ceramic articles contain tetrasilicic fluormica as the predominant crystal phase, they are eminently suitable for use as dental prosthetic materials.

Colored glass-ceramic articles

A glazing device, and a method for using such device to apply a surface glaze to a dental construct, are disclosed. The device comprises glazing material associated with a shrinkable, hollow carrier. The method comprises associating glazing material with a hollow carrier composed of a shrinkable and removable material, assembling the construct and carrier with the construct positioned within the carrier, shrinking the carrier onto the construct, removing the carrier, and maturing the material to a glaze. The device and method find particular application in applying coloration, either uniformly or in a pattern, to a dental construct.

The device and method find particular application in applying coloration, either uniformly or in a pattern, to a dental construct.

The method includes associating glazing material with a carrier composed of a highly flexible and removable material, assembling the construct and carrier with the construct positioned within the carrier, forcing the carrier onto the construct by differential fluid pressure, removing the carrier, and maturing the glazing material to a glaze. The method finds particular application in applying coloration, either uniformly or in a pattern, to a dental construct.

This invention is concerned with preparing fixed partial dentures consisting of abutment crowns and pontics connected through male/female attachments and being sealed together by means of a joining medium. In the most preferred embodiment, the parts of the dentures are formed from machinable glass-ceramic materials and the joining medium is curable through exposure to visible light radiation.
