A fibre optic connector of the watch jewel type is provided with a transparent window adjacent the fibre end whereby the fibre is protected from dirt or damage. The window may be provided with a light guiding portion in alignment with the fibre.

Optical fibre termination

An optical fiber connector of the watch bearing jewel type. To prevent 'growing out' of a fiber end to which the connector is terminated, a thin protective window is placed against the bearing jewel and supported by a fiber stub mounted in a second watch bearing jewel. The fiber and the fiber stub are optically coupled via the window.

Fiber optic connector

A glass sleeve has a bore that, at its ends, provides a clearance fit around optical fibres to be coupled with said bore tapering inwardly to a link piece of glass optical fibre having the same cross-section as that of the fibres to be coupled and unto which the wall of the glass sleeve has been collapsed over substantially the entire length of the link piece. The glass sleeve is retained within the central region of a tubular member by a pair of pierced watch jewels disposed at each end of the member and having apertures that provide a clearance fit around the fibres and are in axial alignment with the sleeve axis.

Jeweled optical fiber connector

An optical fiber coupler comprising a glass sleeve having a link piece of single material glass optical fiber having a refractive index higher than the sleeve mounted in a central section of the sleeve. The central section of the sleeve is collapsed to secure the link piece therein, leaving portions of the sleeve beyond the link piece of sufficient cross-section to freely receive optical fibers therein to be optically coupled. An index matching adhesive is used to secure the fibers in the sleeve abutting the link piece.

Method of joining optical fibers with a link piece

An apparatus for splicing a pair of optical fibres by a collapsed tube technique. The fibre ends are mounted on carrier slides with a coupling sleeve placed on one fibre end. A movable heater fuses the sleeve onto the one fibre after which the second fibre is inserted in the sleeve and held in axial alignment with the first fibre while the splice is completed.

Optical fibre splice jig

A pair of optical fibers is connected by means of a glass sleeve having a lower melting point than the fibers and a bore having a clearance fit over the ends of the fibers to be joined. One fiber is inserted into one end of the sleeve and the sleeve is heated to collapse over the fiber end. Index matching fluid is introduced into the other end of the sleeve before inserting the other fiber therein.

Method for making glass sleeve fiber splice

A permanent butt joint between optical fibers is made by inserting the bare fiber ends into the opposite ends of a slightly oversized bore in a sleeve of glass of lower melting point than the fibers. The central region of the sleeve is collapsed by softening. By this collapse, the butted fibers are brought into alignment. The joint may be protected with a length of heat shrink tubing fitted over the sleeve.
