Methods and systems for augmented geological service characterization are described. An embodiment of a method includes generating a geological service characterization process in response to one or more geological service objectives and a geological service experience information set. Such a method may also include augmenting the geological service characterization process by machine learning in response to a training information set. Additionally, the method may include generating an augmented geological service characterization process in response to the determination information.

Augmented geological service characterization

Methods and systems are provided for characterizing fluids in a subterranean formation traversed by a borehole, where NMR data is measured by a downhole NMR tool that is conveyed in the borehole that traverses the formation. The NMR data is processed to derive T1-T2 maps at different depths of the formation. The T1-T2 maps at different depths of the formation can be processed to generate a cluster map of different fluids that are present in the formation, wherein the cluster map is a two-dimensional array of grid points in the T1-T2 domain with each grid point being assigned or classified to a specific fluid. The cluster map of different fluids that are present in the formation can be used to characterize properties of the formation, such as fluid volumes for the different fluids at one or a number of depths.

Methods for determining fluid volumes from NMR T1-T2 log data

A method for determining resistivity of subsurface formations includes generating an initial model of the formations from multiaxial electromagnetic transimpedance measurements, the model comprising values of vertical resistivity, horizontal resistivity, crossbed dip, crossbed azimuth, and bedding dip and azimuth. Expected measurements generated from the initial model measurements are decomposed into ordinary and extraordinary components. The actual tool measurements are compared to the summation of the expected decomposed measurement components. The initial model is adjusted, the expected decomposed components are recalculated and the foregoing are repeated until the difference between the actual tool measurements and the summation of the expected decomposed components falls below a selected threshold.

Multiaxial well logging instrument response in dipping and crossbedded formations

A petrophysically regularized time domain nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) inversion includes using an NMR tool to acquire NMR data and inverting the acquired NMR data in a time domain using petrophysical constraints. The inverted NMR data is analyzed. The petrophysical constraints may be identified by: determining a number of porobodons to seek, defining a plurality of zones in which only a subset of porobodon sets is present, and stacking all NMR echoes in each zone satisfying discriminators. The number of porobodons to seek may be based on knowledge of core samples, logs, and NMR sensitivity. The discriminator logs may be logs sensitive to porosity partitioning. A computing system having a processor, a memory, and a program stored in memory may be configured to perform the method. The system may be conveyed downhole on a wireline, a while-drilling drill string, a coiled tubing, a slickline, or a wired drill pipe.

Petrophysically regularized time domain NMR inversion

A method for generating a porosity log for a reservoir in an organic shale. The method includes receiving data representing one or more parameters in a reservoir in an organic shale. At least one of the parameters includes porosity. By stochastically inverting the data, a distribution of porobodon features is estimated that matches an observed pulse decay curve. The porosity data relates to petrophysical restrictions on at least one of the porobodon features.

Petrophysically-regularized nuclear magnetic resonance inversion

A method for estimating hydrocarbon volume in a layered subsurface formation includes determining a vertical resistivity and a horizontal resistivity in the formation. A bound water saturation and a total porosity of individual layers of the formation are determined. Values of horizontal resistivity and vertical resistivity of the formation are calculated based on the bound water saturation and the total porosity for each layer and on an estimated irreducible bulk volume of water in each layer. The estimated values are compared to the determined horizontal resistivity and vertical resistivity. The estimated irreducible water saturation in each layer is adjusted and estimating the values is repeated until differences between the estimated values and the determined vertical and horizontal resistivity values fall below a selected threshold. The hydrocarbon volume is estimated from the adjusted irreducible water saturation for each layer.

Method for quantifying resistivity and hydrocarbon saturation in thin bed formations

A method of characterizing a borehole traversing an earth formation including (a) obtaining an array of data from a formation characterization tool, wherein the data describes a section of the borehole; (b) computing at least one spatial characteristic describing the relative position of pairs of data; (c) assigning said pairs of data to bins based on the spatial characteristic, wherein the size of the bins are selected based on the tool; (d) transforming the data to petrophysical properties of the borehole; (e) calculating the variance of each bin; (f) developing a model of the variances; (g) determining at least one geostatistical parameter using the model; and (h) upscaling the geostatistical parameters to characterize a region of said earth formation. The method may further include generating a heterogeneity index log using the geostatistical model parameters. The method may be implemented using a computer program product for processing and interpreting borehole data.

The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for determining the presence of magnetic materials in a media, such as an earth formation. More specifically, the method of the present invention correlates a diffusion-relaxation calibration function representative of magnetic materials with a 2-D function developed using diffusion-editing to determine the presence and relative content of magnetic materials in a media.

Method and apparatus for NMR measurement of magnetic materials

Carbonate formations yield unreliable, down hole NMR results. Inter alia, these results must be corrected for temperature. The invention features several methods for obtaining more reliable NMR results for rock petrophysical parameters in carbonate rock formations based upon adjusting T.sub.2 data with respect to temperature.
