Apparatus for mixing and delivering bone cement

A delivery apparatus for delivering material to a medical treatment site which comprises a plurality of containers for containing the material, a dispensing outlet and means for bringing each container into communication with the outlet and means for transferring material from the containers and through the outlet. The plurality of containers may be removably mounted within a removable cartridge. The apparatus is arranged so that the cartridge is biased to sequentially move each of the containers into communication with the outlet. The outlet may be provided at the end of a dispensing nozzle where the dispensing nozzle has an inner cross-sectional area that is uniform and the same as the containers so that no taper is provided as the material is dispensed from the containers and out of the outlet.

The invention relates to a relatively simple, low cost and effective apparatus for mixing and discharging bone cement into a discharging device such as a syringe, while also providing an improved mixing action and producing minimal fumes. The syringe may be connected to an exit port located between the first and second end of the apparatus. The apparatus is able to both prevent and enable communication between a mixing region of the apparatus and the exit port due to presence of a valve and may further comprise a base which may be integral with the valve so that movement of the base creates movement of the valve within the apparatus.

The apparatus is a mixing and dispensing device for orthopaedic bone cement, comprising an introducer funnel and a mixing syringe body. A mixing shaft and paddle arrangement extends through the funnel and mixing chamber, the paddle having a profile matching the shape of the funnel, in the introducer funnel.

The invention discloses a pre-filled orthopedic cement container in which the cement can also be mixed. The container comprises an outer housing defining the mixing chamber and an inner housing containing the cement prior to mixing. The inner housing is removable, prior to mixing, in such a way that the cement powder remains in the mixing chamber for mixing.

A bone cement mixing apparatus comprises a cylindrical syringe body which functions as a mixing chamber, a mixing element rotatably mounted in the mixing chamber and a drive for causing rotation of the mixing element. The drive includes a handle which is axially movable relative to the mixing chamber and a gear mechanism which couples the handle of the mixing element and translates linear handle motion into rotary mixing element motion. The drive is supported by a chamber lid which engages the syringe body and the lid and drive may be detachable from the syringe body and from the mixing element thereby allowing the lid assembly and drive to be reused.
