A method and apparatus for controlling the operation of a well involves locating a pressure monitoring device downhole and arranging it to be operative: to monitor a characteristic pressure profile of a well during a certain time span controlled by a downhole clock associated with the device; to monitor the temperature downhole in the region of the clock; to calibrate a time reading of the downhole clock with reference to the monitored temperature to correct for drift between the clock time and real time resulting from the downhole elevated temperature; and to respond and generate a triggering output when a significant deviation to the pressure profile is introduced into the well as a control signal to the monitoring device, by comparing two separate pressure profiles within the time span, the device only generating the triggering output when the same pressure profile is monitored twice within the time span.

Method for signalling a downhole device in a well

A method and apparatus for controlling the operation of a well which is not flowing or in which fluid is pumped or injected into the well utilising a downhole located pressure monitoring device which is operative to monitor a characteristic pressure profile of the well, and to respond and generate a triggering output when a significant deviation to the pressure profile is introduced into the well as a control signal to the monitoring device by comparing two separate pressure profiles within a certain time span, the device only generating a triggering output when the same pressure profile is monitored twice within the time span; and an actuator which is initiated into operation to control any required operation of the well when the monitoring device responds to the control signal and generates the triggering output.

A pressure barrier apparatusfor providing a removable pressure barrier in a borehole is described. The apparatus comprises a housingdefining a central borehaving a first partand a second partseparated by an erodeable pressure barrier member. The housing also defines a second fluid flow passagefor connecting the first part to the second part, and a plurality of conduitsfor directing fluid onto the barrier member. A sleevehas a first condition in which fluid communication between the first partand the second fluid flow passageis prevented, and a second condition in which fluid is permitted to flow from the first part to the second fluid flow passage to cause erosion of the barrier member.

A method and apparatus for controlling the operation of a flowing or producing well utilising: a downhole located pressure monitoring device which is operative to monitor a characteristic pressure profile of the flowing well, and to respond when a significant deviation to the pressure profile is introduced into the well as a control signal to the monitoring device; and an actuator which is initiated into operation to control any required operation of the well when the monitoring device responds to the control signal.

Method for signalling a downhole device in a flowing well

A method for repeatably providing large operating forces to actuate a remote device in a well which includes well production means penetrating to some depth, surface means for restricting or closing-off flow of product from the well and changing well pressure during an operating sequence of the well, at least one downhole pressure storage chamber, a valve communicating between the pressure storage chamber and prevailing well pressure, a piston/cylinder device coupled with the remote device to actuate the latter, and isolation valve for controlling the supply of pressure energy from the storage chamber to the piston/cylinder device. The method includes the steps of replenishably storing pressure in the storage chamber during the operating sequence, such stored pressure being derived from fluid flow permitted by the valve, and repeatably operating the isolation valve to apply differential pressure to the piston/cylinder device to actuate the remote device.
