A security fastener is for installation on a wheel having a recess hole. The security fastener includes a first end portion and a second medial portion. The first end portion is arranged so that it will be exposed outside, at or inside an entrance to the recess hole when the fastener is installed on the wheel, and has a security feature that resists fastener removal using conventional tools to grip the first end portion. The second medial portion has an external key-receiving lock pattern and is arranged so that a side wall region thereof will extend within the recess hole when the fastener is installed. The lock pattern is provided on the sidewall region and will be exposed outside, at or inside the entrance to the recess hole.

Security fastener for wheels with a recess hole

A series of high security fastener constructions feature rotatable anti-theft shrouds mounted on locking wheel nuts and wheel bolts designed for vehicular wheels. Each construction features (1) a fastener body having a first body end adapted to accommodate a key receiving pattern or member, a second body end having thread pattern extending therefrom, and a shroud receiving portion located between the first and second body ends, (2) a shroud concentrically mounted on the shroud receiving, and (3) a shroud retaining system for retaining the shroud for rotation relative to the fastener body such that the shroud will rotate under an applied torque prior to the fastener rotating when it is installed at a design installation torque. Exemplary shroud retaining systems include (1) designs in which the shroud is retained by interference engagement of its inner side with the fastener body, (2) designs in which the shroud is retained by staking or swaging to the fastener body, and (3) designs in which the shroud is retained by first and second retaining members that are mounted on the fastener body in facing relationship with first and second annular faces of the shroud. The shroud can be substantially tubular, or it can be thickened at one end to provide a security enhancement feature.

High security fastener constructions

A series of high security fastener constructions feature rotatable anti-theft shrouds mounted on locking wheel nuts and wheel bolts designed for vehicular wheels. Each construction features (1) a fastener body having a first body end adapted to accommodate a key receiving pattern or member, a second body end having thread pattern extending therefrom, and a shroud receiving portion located between the first and second body ends, (2) a shroud concentrically mounted on the shroud receiving, and (3) a shroud retaining system for retaining the shroud for rotation relative to the fastener body such that the shroud will rotate under an applied torque prior to the fastener rotating when it is installed at a design installation torque. Exemplary shroud retaining systems include (1) designs in which the shroud is retained by interference engagement of its inner side with the fastener body, (2) designs in which the shroud is retained by staking or swaging to the fastener body, and (3) designs in which the shroud is retained by first and second retaining members that are mounted on the fastener body in facing relationship with first and second annular faces of the shroud.

A fastener is embodied as a bolt having a shank with a threaded portion for introduction through an aperture in a work piece is disclosed. The fastener is divided into exposed and unexposed portions when used in the work piece. The fastener comprises a first coating formed on the exposed portion and a second coating formed on the unexposed portion. The first and second coatings are mechanically distinct from each other and substantially non-overlapping. The first coating provides a decorative coating on the fastener. The second coating provides a proper torque-tension relationship between the work piece and the unexposed portion. The second coating deposits relatively uniformly to ensure the unexposed portion will not become oversized. An auxiliary coating may further be applied to all or a portion of the unexposed portion, beneath the second coating. The fastener may also be embodied as a nut, a bolt-lock structure, or a lock nut.

Dual plated fasteners

A two-piece lug bolt including a shank having first and second end portions and a central portion there-between, a thread on the first end portion, a first flange of larger diameter than both the first and second end portions located on the central portion of the shank, a head, a first wrench-receiving portion on the head for receiving a wrench, a bore in the head for receiving the second end portion of the shank with a press-fit, a second flange on the head which is of larger diameter than the wrench-receiving portion and substantially the same diameter as the first flange and located in contiguous relationship to the first flange and in bearing relationship therewith, and a second wrench-receiving portion on the shank located between the first flange and the second end portion of the shank and positioned within the head.

Two-piece lug bolt

A locknut including a body having a stud receiving inner surface and an outer surface having a ridge with a shoulder and a cylindrical portion next to the shoulder, an O-ring mounted on the cylindrical portion, a shroud having a cylindrical portion which overlies the cylindrical portion of the nut and engages the O-ring on the cylindrical portion of the nut and conceals it when a shoulder on the cylindrical portion of the shroud is in engagement with the shoulder on the ridge of the nut. The cylindrical portion of the nut has an axial length which is greater than the cylindrical portion of the shroud so that the end of the nut protrudes beyond the end of the shroud when the above-mentioned shoulders are in engagement. A bolt having a head containing structure such as described above relative to the locknut.

Fastener construction

A two-piece lug bolt including a shank having first and second end portions and a central portion therebetween, a thread on the first end portion, a first flange of larger diameter than both the first and second end portions located on the central portion of the shank, a head, a wrench-receiving portion on the head for receiving a wrench, a bore in the head for receiving the second end portion of the shank with a press-fit and a second flange on the head which is of larger diameter than the wrench-receiving portion and substantially the same diameter as the first flange located in contiguous relationship to the first flange and in bearing relationship therewith.
