The present invention is directed to an end connector for a cross tee for use in a suspended ceiling grid system. The end connector includes a front portion adapted to be inserted by a stab in motion into a vertical opening in a web of a main tee and a rear portion adapted to be attached to an end of a cross tee. The front portion has front, bottom and top edges with a first lock arrangement provided on a top edge of the front portion, the first lock region providing a connection between the end connector and a web of a main tee when the connector is inserted into an opening in a web of a main tee. The first lock arrangement extends angularly outwardly of the end connector and has a forward portion resiliently deflectable from its rest position to pass through an opening in a web of a main tee and then spring back to its rest position. A web containing area is located rearwardly of the forward portion for containing a web of a main tee and a stop surface is located rearwardly of the web containing area. The front portion of the end connector also has a second lock arrangement located within the body of the front portion for locking engagement with a complementary second lock arrangement of another end connector to interlock two such connectors inserted from opposite sides into an opening of a web of a main tee.

Suspended ceiling cross tee end connector

A horizontally curved grid tee for suspension ceilings is bent in the direction parallel to the plane of the flanges of the grid tee. Such grid tee is provided with end connectors and openings so that the grid tee can be assembled in a suspension ceiling grid combining curved grid tees and/or straight grid tees to produce aesthetically pleasing patterns. When panels are installed in the openings defined by the curved grid tees, appropriate mating curves are formed in the panels so that the panels are supported at their periphery. A method and apparatus for producing such grid tees involves curved tooling which cooperates to confine a straight grid tee as it is bent to the curved shape. The tooling provides grooves into which the flanges project during the bending operation. Such grooves are constructed and dimensioned so that the inner portion of the flange which is subjected to compressive stresses is not buckled. Such tooling allows the production of curved grid tees having a planar smooth flange in which the exposed surface coating applied as a prepainting operation is not damaged.

Curved grid tees for suspension ceilings

A suspension ceiling grid system having grid runners connected at intersections including a through-runner and opposed runner ends connected together and to the through-runner on opposite sides of the through-runner. Each runner end is provided with an end connector which extends through an opening in the web of the through-runner. Each connector is provided with a first-end-in-lock which connects the connector to the through-runner itself and a dual connector-to-connector lock which interconnects the two connectors at the intersection. The first-end-in-lock provides opposed lateral projections which engage the remote side of the web of the through-runner beyond the ends of the opening therein. The connectors may be disassembled from an intersection without the need for tools and without damage to either the connector or the through-runner opening. Further, an intersection can be disassembled and subsequently reassembled in a trapped module condition.

Connector for suspension ceiling grid

A snap-up panel for suspension ceiling systems is disclosed. The panel is formed of sheet metal and provides a central planar section and four upwardly extending flanges along the edges of the planar section. Each flange is formed with an inwardly directed rib extending along the length of the flange at a point spaced from the upper and lower edges thereof. Detents are provided in the flanges adjacent to the corners and are positioned in alignment with the ribs and sized to project beyond the inner extremity of the ribs. These detents provide additional support for the panel when the ribs are snapped over supporting lips in a suspension ceiling grid system. Improved alignment and support of the panels are provided by the detents when the panels are installed in a suspension ceiling grid.

Suspension ceiling with snap-up panels

Honeycomb floor panels for use in elevated floors or the like are disclosed. The honeycomb structure provides similar metal strips providing lateral cuts along one edge providing angulated tabs. The angulation of the tabs provides an angulated throat having a width substantially greater than the thickness of the strips so that the strips can be assembled in an interfitting relationship while the strips of the two arrays are angulated with respect to each other. After assembly, the arrays are moved to a substantially perpendicular position, and in such position a tight fitting relationship is achieved to eliminate looseness. Such honeycomb is provided, in accordance with one embodiment, with upper and lower metal sheets which are welded or otherwise fastened to the honeycomb itself. In such embodiment, an additional upper surface sheet is provided to prevent denting and to distribute concentrated loads to prevent crushing of the honeycomb. Sound deadening is provided between the two upper sheets. In another embodiment, the honeycomb only extends a portion of the distance from the bottom of the panel and is embedded at its upper edge in a layer of lightweight concrete. The concrete provides the load bearing surface of the panel.

Method of making honeycomb floor panel

A suspension ceiling grid system is disclosed which provides intersections including through-runners and oppositely extending runner ends. The through-runner is provided with a connector opening and the runner ends are provided with identical end connectors. The end connectors are engaged and disengaged by lateral movement and provide spring means which resiliently urge the end connectors toward the locked position. The end connectors provide two locking systems, one of which provides a connection with the through-runner when only one connector is installed in the connector opening, and subsequently provides an improved strength functionally direct connection between the two end connectors when two end connectors are installed within the connector opening from opposite sides. The end connectors provide a second separate locking system which directly connects between the two end connectors. In one embodiment, a connector system is disclosed which allows easy removal of a runner within an assembled grid.

Honeycomb floor panel and the like

A panel system for walls, ceilings, and the like is disclosed in which the panels are provided with a flexible surface material which extends into resilient means that operate to press the surface material of adjacent panels into face-to-face contact to provide a closed, neat joint between adjacent panels. Because of the resiliency along the joints, brackets, screws, and the like may be inserted through the joints and secured to the panel supporting frame structure without damage to the panel materials. Subsequently, if the brackets, screws, and the like are removed, the resilient means returns the flexible sheet material into the face-to-face abutting condition, re-establishing the closed joint and concealing the fact that anything had previously been inserted through the joint. In some embodiments, the surface sheet material is provided with a loose flap which is inserted into the resilient means after the panels are installed. Shelf standards and the like may be provided behind the joint which are obscured from view, but which permit easy mounting of shelf brackets or the like through the joint.

A ceiling runner is disclosed for use in a ceiling grid system of a suspended ceiling. Each of the main and lateral runners of this ceiling grid system has a similar shape in the flange at the lower end of a generally T-shaped structure. Such flange has first and second flange portions on each side of the web portion, and these flange portions are joined to the web portion by first and second connector portions which are recessed toward the web portion. This establishes a longitudinal recess in the exposed surface of the flange so that a distinctive appearance of the ceiling runner is provided which has definite longitudinal delineation between the ceiling panels. Preferably, the connector portions are shaped to maintain a panel in its proper centered position or to cam such panel to such centered position. The foregoing abstract is merely a resume of one general application, is not a complete discussion of all principles of operation or applications, and is not to be construed as a limitation on the scope of the claimed subject matter.

Delineated ceiling grid in suspended ceiling

A demountable wall system is disclosed providing metal studs adapted to be positioned along the joints between adjacent wall panels. The studs provide outer flanges which are positioned in kerfs along the edges of the panels and inner flanges which engage the inner surface of the panels. A U-shaped web system connects the inner flanges and is structured with the legs of the U-shaped web spaced from the adjacent flanges except at their extremities so that the legs cushion vibration or sound to minimize their transmission through the stud between the two sides of the wall. The inner flanges have a width exceeding twice the depth of the kerfs so that they engage panels beyond the kerf-weakened edges thereof.

Demountable partition structure

A metal stud assembly is disclosed for use in either drywall construction or as intermediate studs in demountable walls. The stud assembly includes a U-shaped stud member and a U-shaped stud extension which telescopes into one end of the stud member with a resilient-type of interference fit which produces a controlled resistance to relative axial movement and eliminates possible looseness. The stud extension is provided with angulated tabs which snap into a channel-shaped ceiling track to lock the stud extension therein. The lower end of the stud fits into a channel-shaped floor track to secure the lower end of the stud assembly in place. The stud assembly is sufficiently flexible to allow the lower end to be twisted through about 90.degree. to position the narrow dimension thereof crosswise with respect to the floor track for easy insertion. After insertion, the stud assembly is returned to the untwisted position to complete the installation.

Extendable stud for partition walls or the like

A channel structure for assembly into a suspended ceiling or the like and which is arranged to maintain the structural integrity of the ceiling during exposure to the heat of a fire. The channel structure includes an end splice arrangement having elements which develop a telescoping relationship between joined channels and thereby avoid buckling during thermally induced axial expansion of the channels.

Fire rated ceiling

A structure of a grid tee member for suspension ceilings, and a method for producing such structure is disclosed. Such grid tee provides a web, a bulb at one web extremity and a flange at the other web extremity. The tee section includes three strips of material in which the first strip is relatively thin and is shaped to provide the web, a portion of the bulb and a portion of the flanges. A separate cap strip is secured to the flanges on the side thereof remote from the web and separate stiffening material having a generally U-shaped cross section is located within the bulb with the base of the U located at the extremity of the section. The three strips provide a structure in which material is concentrated at the extremities and is therefore efficiently placed to provide a high moment of inertia and high rigidity to the total structure. The thickness of the three strips is separately selected so that the material forming the section efficiently functions to provide a cross section in which the centroid is substantially midway between the extremities. The illustrated structure is produced by a method in which the stiffener strip and the strip forming the main structure of the section are lance knitted while the two strips are in the flat condition and then are simultaneously formed to produce the bulb with a U-shaped stiffener enclosed within the bulb.

Grid tee for suspension ceilings or the like

A pedestal assembly for supporting elevated floors having means for adjusting its height in the form of a generally triangular wedge. The wedge is horizontally displaceable on the assembly to cam an upper carrier element of the assembly into a desired elevation. The assembly is provided with self-locking means to maintain the wedge and carrier elements in their selected positions. The self-locking means comprises a taper lock and supplementary locking teeth operative on the wedge in response to loading applied thereto through the carrier element.
