A shaft coupling for connecting an upper shaft with a lower shaft within a pumping system is designed to handle a large tensile load between the upper and lower shafts. In some embodiments, the upper shaft includes a shaft ring groove and the coupling has a body and a first receiving chamber within the body that receives an end of the upper shaft. The coupling also includes an upper internal groove extending into the body from the first receiving chamber and an upper split ring that is configured to be compressed into a position occupying both the upper internal groove and the shaft ring groove of the upper shaft. Set screws compress the upper split ring into the shaft ring groove of the upper shaft. In another embodiment, the coupling includes a plurality of locking screws that extend through the body into corresponding lock screw grooves in the upper and lower shafts.

A well pump seal section housing connects between a pump and a motor. Upper and lower retainers at upper and lower ends of the housing have outward facing cylindrical walls. A bladder has an interior in fluid communication with dielectric lubricant in the motor. Rigid upper and lower sleeves are bonded within upper and lower openings of the bladder. The sleeves slide over the cylindrical walls of the retainers and are sealed by seal rings. Fasteners secure the sleeves to the cylindrical walls.

A centrifugal pump has a number of stages, each of the stages having an impeller and a diffuser. The impellers are mounted to the pump drive shaft for rotation. A bearing in at least one of the stages includes a sleeve coupled to the drive shaft for rotation. The sleeve has upper and lower ends and an outer side wall facing radially outward that is convex and spherical. A bushing is mounted in the diffuser and has a bore with an inner side wall facing radially inward that is concave and spherical. A pair of slots is formed in the inner side wall of the bushing 180 degrees apart from each other and extending axially. The slots enable the sleeve to be inserted into the bore with the sleeve axis and bore axis perpendicular to each other, then tilted 90 degrees to coincide the sleeve axis with the bore axis.

A submersible pump assembly includes a centrifugal pump driven by a motor. The pump has a number of stages, each of the stages having a diffuser and an impeller. An upthrust washer is located between a diffuser upthrust surface and an impeller upthrust surface. Balance holes extend from an inlet on an upper side of the impeller to an outlet within one of the impeller passages. The upthrust washer overlies the inlets while the impeller is in the upthrust position. Slots are located at an interface between the upthrust washer and the impeller upthrust surface. Each of the slots registers with the inlet of one of the balance holes to allow fluid flow into the inlets of the balance holes while the impeller is in the upthrust position.

An electrical submersible pump assembly includes a centrifugal pump having stages. Each of the stages has an impeller in cooperative engagement with a downstream diffuser. The impeller is axially movable relative to the downstream diffuser between a downthrust and an upthrust position. The downstream diffuser has an annular downstream wall surface, relative to the impeller, defining a downstream cavity. The impeller has a downstream balance ring that locates alongside the downstream wall surface. An annular clearance between the downstream balance ring and the downstream wall surface increases in response to the impeller moving from the downthrust to the upthrust position.
