A composition including a triglyceride containing glycerol which is esterified with three fatty acids, wherein the three fatty acids include at least one fatty acid selected from caprylic acid, capric acid, &#x3b1;-linolenic acid, linoleic acid, oleic acid, arachidonic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid and docosapentaenoic acid. The total amount of caprylic acid, capric acid, a-linolenic acid, linoleic acid, oleic acid, arachidonic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid and docosapentaenoic acid is greater than 60%, based on the total weight of the fatty acids in a base or starting emulsion. The various physical mixtures of triglycerides containing the primary therapeutic fatty acid can be blended to form pre-defined amounts for the treatment of various acute pathological conditions.

An emulsion is provided including: an oil component and a water component, the oil component including: fish oil triglycerides in an amount of about 60% to about 90% based on the weight of the oil component; wherein the fish oil triglycerides include omega-3 fatty acids, expressed as triglycerides, in an amount of at least 60%, based on the total weight of the fatty acids of the fish oil triglycerides; wherein the fish oil triglycerides include a total amount of EPA and DHA, expressed as triglycerides, of at least 45%, based on the total weight of the fatty acids of the fish oil triglycerides; and, at least one medium-chain triglyceride, wherein a total amount of the at least one medium-chain triglyceride is from about 10% to about 40% based on the weight of the oil component.

A method and apparatus for determining the stability of dispersions and emulsions accelerates the onset of significant particle agglomeration in a sample by stressing the sample by reducing the height of the interparticle potential energy barrier between the particles. This is achieved by adding one or more of three stress factors: changing the pH of the sample to reduce the surface charge on the particles; adding an adsorbing electrolyte so that ions of the appropriate charge are adsorbed onto the surfaces of the particles to reduce the net charge on the particles; and applying a monovalent, divalent, or trivalent salt to partially screen electrostatic repulsions between the charged particles. In a preferred embodiment, the increase in agglomeration is detected with single particle detection, such as SPOS, to generate a PSD from which a figure of merit is derived. Another embodiment detects turbidity or light scattering to generate a value X indicative of the extent of agglomeration.

Stability assessment of dispersions and emulsions

A method for reducing the number lipid droplets having a diameter exceeding a preselected threshold in a nutritional emulsion has been developed. The method has the steps of passing the nutritional emulsion, under pressure, through a filter having a pore size smaller than the threshold. A filter having a mean pore size of about 1.2 .mu.m with a standard deviation of about 0.5 is sufficient to exclude lipid droplets having a diameter in excess of five .mu.m.

Use of an in-line filter in the preparation of total nutrient admixtures

A method of preparing TPN solutions, which is particularly well adaptable to computerized control, has been developed. These methods can assist the pharmacist or physician in the preparation of three-in-one TPN solutions containing lipid, dextrose and amino acids. The method includes a series of criteria for concentrations of lipid, dextrose, amino acids, and ions as well as eliminating the possibility of certain deleterious interactions.
