An improved process for making an engine poppet valve provides an unfinished poppet valve with an initial diameter (d ) of a valve head and an initial thickness (t ) of an interface between a seat facing groove and a combustion face of the valve prior to seat facing the valve to prevent burn-through during the welding process Coining the valve head after seat facing decreases the initial thickness (t ) of the interface to a selected thickness (t ) and increases the initial diameter (d ) to a final or desired diameter (d ) of the valve head The method of the present invention eliminates any need for removing excess material and allows for hot forming the seat facing material to reduce machining steps.
