A compact game controller incorporates an efficient and compact force feedback mechanism. Forces are generated at one of the controls of the controller in reaction to an action in a video game. The type of controller that can be held with two hands is limited in terms of size and internal space and in wireless versions is limited in terms of battery power. Efficient power consumption in the controller enables considerable usage time between battery replacement or recharging in wireless versions. The force feedback mechanism incorporates a double reduction gear system with a unique geometry which enables usage of a compact and energy efficient motor. The efficient force feedback mechanism and assembly can therefore be packaged within a compact ergonomic controller.

A system with a main monitor for a host computer and a second, mini monitor for displaying a portion of the display normally intended for the main monitor. In one embodiment, the mini monitor is connected to the computer over a shared, peripheral bus, such as the universal serial bus (USB). Embodiments of the present invention are directed to preventing calibration of a device to exceed the full design travel, for instance, during aggressive operation or play. A limiter is coupled to the rotational sensor to limit the full travel output signal to a fixed and repeatable maximum value no matter how aggressive the operation or play becomes. The limit is desirably set at such a point as normal operation or play will always reach. In this way, the automatic calibration of the device will not exceed the full design travel. In one embodiment, an input device comprises a user manipulable object configured to rotate around a rotational axis relative to a base. A rotational sensor includes a sensor body coupled with a sensor shaft which is rotatable relative to the sensor body around the rotational axis. The sensor shaft is connected with the user manipulable object to rotate with the user manipulable object around the rotational axis. An actuator is coupled with the user manipulable object to rotate with the user manipulable object. The actuator is configured to be coupled with the sensor body, after the user manipulable object has rotated to reach a preset limit, to rotate the sensor body with the sensor shaft and the user manipulable object beyond the preset limit.

Embodiments of the present invention are directed to gear based transmission apparatus that are configured to reduce or eliminate the backlash effects. In one embodiment, a transmission apparatus comprises a follower gear, a first drive gear set coupled with the follower gear to drive the follower gear, and a second drive gear set coupled with the follower gear to drive the follower gear. The first drive gear set includes at least one gear, and the second drive gear set includes at least one gear. A controller is coupled with the first drive gear set and the second drive gear set. The controller is configured to synchronize the first drive gear set and the second drive gear set to drive the follower gear in a first direction in a first transmission drive mode, the controller being configured to reverse the direction of the first drive gear set by a phase-shift time period before reversing the direction of the second drive gear set in a transmission reversal mode so as to reduce or eliminate backlash in the first drive gear set prior to engaging the first drive gear set with the follower gear to drive the follower gear in a second direction opposite from the first direction.

A tactile force feedback apparatus for an input device comprises an inertial member having a movable portion being movable relative to the input device. A magnetically actuatable member is connected to the movable portion of the inertial member. A magnetic driver is configured to generate a magnetic field to move the magnetically actuatable member and the movable portion of the inertial member with respect to the input device to generate tactile force feedback in response to a user's manipulation of the input device. The movable portion of the inertial member may include a contact member movable to strike the input device. The contact member may comprise an elastomeric material, and may be movable to make contact with the input device at a plurality of different contact locations during movement of the contact member.
