Lubricant compositions comprising a base oil, one or more antioxidants selected from a group consisting of N-α-naphthyl-N-phenylamine antioxidants and diphenylamine antioxidants; and one or more sulfur-containing additives exhibit outstanding oxidative stability and non-corrosion properties. The N-α-naphthyl-N-phenylamine antioxidants plus diphenylamine antioxidants in total may be present from about 0.2 wt % to about 0.8 wt %, based on the total weight of the lubricant composition. The sulfur provided by the sulfur-containing additives, in total, may be present from about 50 ppm to about 1000 ppm by weight, based on the total weight of the lubricant composition.

Lubricant compositions comprising a base oil, one or more antioxidants selected from a group consisting of N-&#x3b1;-naphthyl-N-phenylamine antioxidants and diphenylamine antioxidants; and a sulfur-containing additive comprising up to seven carbon atoms exhibit outstanding oxidative stability and non-corrosion properties. The N-&#x3b1;-naphthyl-N-phenylamine antioxidants plus diphenylamine antioxidants in total may be present from about 0.2 wt % to about 0.8 wt %, based on the total weight of the lubricant composition. A lubricant composition is substantially free of water and includes a base oil present in an amount of greater than 85 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the lubricant composition, includes an antioxidant, and includes one or more alkylethercarboxylic acid corrosion inhibitor(s) present in an amount of from 0.01 to 1 weight percent based on a total weight of said lubricant composition. The instant invention provides a lubricant composition having improved four-ball antiwear properties. The lubricant composition includes a base oil and one or more alkylethercarboxylic acid corrosion inhibitor(s) having the formula: wherein R is a straight or branched chain C-Calkyl group and n is a number of from 0 to 5. The lubricant composition also includes an ashless antiwear additive including phosphorous. The four-ball antiwear properties are reported as an average diameter of wear scars pursuant to ASTM D4172. The average diameter of the wear scars resulting from the lubricant composition are at least 5% smaller than the average diameter of the wear scars resulting from a standard that includes the base oil and the antiwear additive and that is free of the one or more alkylethercarboxylic acid corrosion inhibitor(s).

The invention relates to liquid sulphur-containing antioxidants and to compositions comprising them. The novel lubricant compositions comprise the reaction product of a selected group of 5-tert-butyl-4-hydroxy-3-methyl(or tert-butyl)phenyl substituted carboxylic acid esters with thiodiethylene glycol and a mono-hydroxy alcohol with a carbon chain length higher than 4 C-atoms. The novel lubricant compositions are highly resistant to oxidative degradation and are capable of reducing the negative effects of deposits, such as black sludge, in motor combustion engines, particularly spark ignition internal combustion engines.

Liquid phenolic sulphur-containing antioxidants

The instant invention relates to a lubricant composition stabilized against the deleterious effects of heat and oxygen. The composition comprises a triglyceride oil or an oil which is an ester wherein unsaturation is present in either the alcohol moiety or the acid moiety and an effective stabilizing amount of either an N,N-disubstituted aminomethyl-1,2,4-triazole or an N,N-disubstituted aminomethylbenzotriazole; a higher alkyl substituted amide of dodecylene succinic acid; a phenolic antioxidant; and an aromatic amine antioxidant. Substituted 1-aminonaphthalenes of formula I ##STR1## wherein n is 1-3, Ar is arylene, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently hydrogen, alkyl or phenyl, R.sub.3 is hydrogen, alkyl or substituted alkyl, and R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 have independently the same definitions as R.sub.3 or are independently aryl, substituted aryl or cycloalkyl, are effective stabilizers for lubricating oil or polymer compositions. The instant compounds are particularly effective in lubricating oil compositions when used with a diarylamine antioxidant.
