A passive optical network (PON) comprises an Optical Line Termination (OLT), an Optical Distribution Network (ODN), and a plurality of Optical Network Terminations (ONTs), wherein the OLT includes an OLT Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) multiplexer, an OLT CWDM demultiplexer, and a Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) filter, wherein the OLT DWDM multiplexer and the OLT CWDM demultiplexer are coupled to the WDM filter, wherein the ODN includes a WDM filter, a DWDM demultiplexer, and a plurality of fanout splitters, wherein the DWDM demultiplexer is coupled to the WDM filter, wherein the WDM filters are coupled to one another and wherein a portion of the plurality of ONTs that are associated with a wavelength are coupled to one of fanout splitters that is associated with the wavelength.

A method and apparatus for regulating rogue behavior in optical transmission devices. The apparatus, for example, may be implemented in one or more of the ONTs in a PON. The ONT includes an optical transmitter that may be disabled by a command generated by the ONT itself if rogue behavior is detected or suspected. To detect rogue behavior, at least one output indictor, such as LBC or MPC, is monitored during one or more monitoring windows. If monitoring indicates that the optical transmitter is transmitting more than a pre-determined threshold, a suspect rogue flag is set, for example in an I2C register. The register is read, preferably a number of successive times, and a determination is made whether to disable the optical transmitter. In some embodiments, the OLT is queried as part of this determination. The disability may be permanent, until a manual service operation, for example, or temporary.

A method, a computer readable medium, and a system for discovering an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) in a Dense Wave Division Multiplex (DWDM) hybrid Passive Optical Network (PON) Line Terminal (LT), comprises implementing, by an Optical Line Termination (OLT), a ranging procedure on at least one downstream link, wherein the OLT is communicably coupled to the ONT, discovering at least one new ONT, by the OLT, on the at least one downstream link based on the ranging procedure, discovering an unranged ONT, by the OLT, during the ranging procedure, and determining, by the OLT, that the unranged ONT resides on the at least one downstream link.

A transmission system for a passive optical network comprises a shared optical transmission apparatus, a shared electrical interface apparatus and a plurality of transmission convergence termination units. The plurality of transmission convergence termination units is coupled to the shared electrical interface apparatus. Each one of the transmission convergence termination units is configured for selectively controlling the shared electrical interface apparatus.

A single grant generating apparatus has the responsibility of generating grants and grant rates for multiple ONTUs and grant patterns of a PON system. Accordingly, the single grant generating apparatus must perform bandwidth allocation functionality for the ONTUs of the PON in a serial manner. Disclosed bandwidth allocation approaches accomplish automated spacing of grants for a plurality of ONTUs in a balanced and uniform manner is accomplished whereby improved bandwidth allocation efficiency and resolution is provided for a PON system. By improving bandwidth allocation efficiency and resolution, a greater number of subscribers can be subscribed to PON services on a PON. This balanced and uniform manner of generating grants dramatically reduces the potential of grants clumping too closely together.
