A golf club head and a method of tuning the golf club head. The golf club head includes a body having a front surface, a back surface, a heel end, a toe end, a sole extending between the lower portions of the heel and the toe ends, a top portion extending between the upper portions of the heel and toe ends, and a cavity. One or more magnets are mounted in the cavity such that their distance into the cavity can be adjusted. A detachable face plate having one or more magnets attached to a back surface of the detachable face plate is slidably mated with guides extending from the body. At least two of the magnets are positioned such that the north pole of the magnet in the cavity faces the north pole of a magnet attached to the back surface of the detachable face plate. A repulsive force between the north poles pushes the detachable face plate away from the body and into a stop coupled to the body. The strength of the repulsive force is adjusted by the distance between the magnets to provide a golfer with the desired face plate stiffness.

A golf club head has a face insert that is supported from beneath by a substrate composed of a plurality of elongate rod elements arranged in a parallel closely packed array. Because the face insert is made of a single material, the resiliency of the face insert itself does not vary across the front surface of the face insert; however, the effective resiliency of the face insert may be varied by varying the resiliency of the substrate. This is accomplished by selecting different materials and/or different overall lengths for the rod elements that comprise the substrate. Use of a substrate comprising a plurality of rod elements permits the effective resiliency of the face insert to be varied without varying the face material.

A golf club head has a cavity for receiving a face insert. A first face insert, which is disposed in the cavity, has a front surface that is contoured. A second face insert composed of multiple rod elements is disposed in the cavity on top of the first face insert so that the rod elements are supported by the contoured front surface of the first face insert. Because the first face insert supporting the rod elements is contoured, the individual rod elements are of different lengths and, therefore, exhibit different dynamic responses when striking a golf ball, even when the rod elements are made of the same material.

A selectable insert for a golf club head (e.g., for a golf putter) is configured to produce a predetermined frequency response through the use of, for example, a damped single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system. A set of such inserts are provided, and one or more inserts from that set is selected in accordance with the response of an individual, for example, an individual's subjective response to the sound of the insert and/or an individual's biomechanical response to the 'feel' or discomfort produced by vibrations propagating through the golf club to the individual. In this way, a customized insert may be selected in accordance with, for example: whether and to what extent the individual finds the frequency response of the inset pleasing to the ear; the extent to which the insert produces unpleasant vibrations in the hands, wrists, arms, and other parts of the individual's body; whether the weighting of the club head is suitable; whether the club head is susceptible to unwanted twisting during impact; and/or whether the overall 'feel' of the club is subjectively acceptable.

Methods and apparatus for using a frequency-selectable insert in a golf club head

A golf club head includes a body with a top wall, a bottom wall, and a front wall arranged for impacting a golf ball. The front wall has an inner surface and an outer surface. The front wall varies in thickness and has a bulging area of increased thickness on its inner surface. The bulging area of increased thickness includes a generally ring shaped mass that projects rearwardly from the front wall. A generally cone shaped mass, that also projects rearwardly from the front wall, may be located inside the ring shaped mass.

A golf club having suppressed vibration modes is disclosed. The club comprises a shaft, a golf club head, a grip and a plurality of discrete shaft stiffeners. The shaft stiffeners are strategically located along the shaft so as to shift the nodes of at least the second and third flexural vibration modes of the club shaft such that a node of each of the second and third flexural vibration modes occurs both at the club face and within the region underlying the golf club grip. Preferably, the stiffeners are made of a shape memory alloy that can be shrunk onto the outside surface of the shaft, then expanded to permit the position of the stiffeners to be adjusted to suit the boundary conditions imposed by the human user.

A vibration dampening insert for use in golf clubs includes a plug member located inside a shaft of a golf club. The plug member has a plurality of cavities formed therein, and a plurality of spherical weight members are disposed in the plurality of cavities. The plug member is made of an elastomeric material, and the spherical weight members consist of steel balls. The vibration dampening insert dampens vibration resulting when a club head of a golf club impacts a golf ball so that vibration is prevented from being transmitted to a golfer who is swinging the golf club.

A golf club head includes a heel end, a toe end, a front face arranged to impact a golf ball, and a back face disposed rearwardly of the front face. A perimeter weighting element of increased mass protrudes rearwardly away from the front face and defines a cavity in the back face. The perimeter weighting element includes a top rail and a sole. A plurality of ribs are disposed in the cavity for eliminating undesirable vibrations in the golf club head when the front face impacts a golf ball and for attenuating other vibrations in the golf club head. Each of the ribs extends generally radially relative to the cavity from an inner end to an outer end that merges with the perimeter weighting element. An elliptically shaped geometric mass concentration is formed on a bottom surface of the cavity for assisting the plurality of ribs in eliminating the undesirable vibrations and in attenuating the other vibrations. The geometric mass concentration is surrounded by a depression formed in the cavity bottom surface, and the ribs extend across the depression.
