Mounting arrangement for muffler

A combination comprises a muffler and a mounting band constructed and arranged to secure the muffler in a hanging orientation. The mounting band includes a continuous, arcuate metallic strap having first and second ends. The metallic strap is positioned in extension circumferentially around the muffler. The first and second ends of the metallic strap are welded to one another to retain the metallic strap as a continuous band around the muffler. The hanger is secured to a continuous portion of the metallic strap. The hanger is centered radially along the strap, at a location about 150.degree.-210.degree. from the weld of the strap ends.

Assembly for mounting of a muffler; combination and method

An vertical mount catalytic converter muffler for use on a combustion engine is provided. The vertical mount catalytic converter includes a muffler body having an exhaust inlet, an exhaust outlet and a sound attenuator; a catalytic converter arrangement positioned within the muffler arrangement between the exhaust inlet and the exhaust outlet; and a water collector and diverter arrangement positioned within the muffler body between the catalytic converter arrangement and the exhaust outlet. The water collector and diverter arrangement can include a funnel cup and conduit arrangement which collects water which enters through the exhaust outlet or which condenses in the muffler body, and diverts the collected water away from the catalytic converter. The vertical mount catalytic converter muffler can be assembled without using a leakproof weld.

Vertical mount catalytic converter muffler

An apparatus for modifying an exhaust stream of a diesel engine is provided. The apparatus includes a muffler arrangement having an exhaust inlet and an exhaust outlet in construct and arrange for sound attenuation therein. The apparatus also includes a catalytic converter arrangement positioned within the muffler arrangement. During operation, the exhaust flow is directed both through the muffler arrangement and the catalytic converter arrangement, to advantage.

Muffler with catalytic converter arrangement; and method

A muffler comprising a housing (12) having end caps (16, 18) and partitions (32, 38, 42) which divide it into first and second expansion chambers (40, 44), a flow chamber (36), and a resonator chamber (34). An inlet tube (20) passes through end cap (16) and partitions (38) and (32) to open into chamber (34): it has perforations (58) and (62) which afford communication with chambers (40) and (36) respectively. An outlet tube (24) passes through end cap (18) and partitions (42) and (32) to open into chamber (36): it has perforations (70) which afford communication with chamber (44), and includes anti-whistle beads (72). A conversion-divergent nozzle (80) is located in tube (22) at its end opening into chamber (36). Apertures (190) are provided to afford limited flow of gas through chamber (34) from tube (20) to chamber (36).

Muffler assembly

A muffler (10) for reducing the noise level of gases passing therethrough is disclosed. The muffler (10) includes a housing (12) including a longitudinally extending wall (14) and a pair of opposite end walls (16, 18). Baffle plates (32, 38, 42) divide the interior space of the housing (12) into a Helmholtz resonator chamber (34), a flow chamber (36), an inlet broad band attenuator chamber (40) and an outlet broad band attenuator chamber (44). An inlet tube (20) extends through an inlet port (21) in the end wall (16), through a hole (48) in the baffle plate (38) and through a hole (50) in the baffle plate (32). An outlet tube (22) passes through an outlet port (23) in the end wall (18), through a hole (52) in the baffle plate (42) and through a hole (54) in the baffle plate (32). Exhaust gases enter the muffler (10 ) through the inlet tube (20), pass through holes (62) into the flow chamber (36) and exit the muffler (10) through the outlet tube (22). Broad band attenuation of noise being carried by the exhaust gases occurs in the inlet and outlet attenuation chambers (40, 44) and in a nozzle member (80). Narrow band noise attenuation occurs in the Helmholtz resonator chamber (34).
