A self-threading and feeding arrangement for a printer including a drop-in supply station, a printing station and a take-up station. A pay-out roller is journaled across the bottom arcuate wall of the supply station for supporting a web of print receiving media placed therein. A take-up spool includes a retainer for interengaging with a lead of the media web to positively draw the web around the rotated spool. The take-up station also includes a slot-like exit guide chute that has a contoured tip for cooperating with the retainer on the take-up spool, during loading of a new roll, to place the web lead into engagement with the retainer. A drive roller, and preferably the pay-out roller, are driven by a first stepping motor, and the take-up spool is driven by a separately actuable second stepping motor.

Self-threading journal printer

A laser diode alignment apparatus and method for an optical scanner which independently minimizes lateral and angular deviation of a laser beam from the scanner axis. The alignment apparatus includes a socket member and a plug member. The socket member includes a cylindrical wall portion, including a circular inner ridge having an inwardly facing spherical surface, and a base portion coupled to the cylindrical wall portion having a rearwardly facing spherical surface and a circular aperture therethrough. The plug member contains the laser diode and includes a cylindrical front end portion including a spherical front edge section, having the same curvature as the rearwardly facing spherical surface, and a spherical center portion coupled to the cylindrical front end portion having the same curvature as the inwardly facing spherical surface. The plug member has a beam origin point coinciding with the diode's combined center of rotation and pivot point. The alignment method centers a screen, having a reference point, on the axis and at the focal point of the scanner, places the laser beam origin point on the scanner axis, and moves the laser diode until the laser beam image coincides with the reference point on the screen.

An impact printing apparatus includes an armature and print wire assembly in which a plastic arm is injection molded to interact with recesses in an armature and to surround a portion of a print wire to provide a rigid interconnection between the armature and the print wire.

Dot matrix print head armature

A snap-fit fastening or mounting arrangement for a motor having a mounting flange. The fastening or mounting arrangement includes a side frame member having a pair of spring-like snap elements that are integral with the side frame member for securing the motor. The frame member also includes a pair of pilot studs integral therewith and positioned to be received by apertures in the mounting flange to resist torque of the motor. The side frame member includes a plurality of hubs as an integral portion thereof and gears are journaled on the hubs in an arrangement driven by the motor. A fastening element is provided with spring fingers which are inserted into the aperture of each hub and retained thereby to secure the respective gear on the hub.

A mounting arrangement for a solenoid includes a frame member and a plurality of mounting elements formed integral with the frame member. A wall member has first, second and third projections which extend therefrom and are spaced to receive first and second frame portions of the solenoid. A pair of lugs are formed integral with the frame member and include slanted surfaces to enable rotation of the solenoid into mounting position.

A mechanism for compensating for different thicknesses of record media at a printing station utilizes a platen assembly which is coupled with a pivotable arm structure to move the platen assembly toward and away from the print head. The pivotable arm structure is swung in an eccentric manner relative to the center of the platen assembly to move the platen in a linear path to accommodate the record media.

Record media thickness compensating mechanism

A fastener-backstop member secures the coil assemblies to the housing of a print head by means of a flange portion at one end and a plurality of fingers at the other end thereof. The member has a flat surface between the ends thereof to provide a home position for the printing elements.

Dot matrix print head

A wire matrix print head includes a generally circular portion for supporting a plurality of electromagnetic actuators and their associated armatures for driving print wires which are supported and guided in a nose portion of the housing a precise distance from a non-printing to a printing position. The print wire support and guide system is assembled separately from the main body of the print head to facilitate the insertion of the print wires.

A plurality of solenoid bobbins or bobbin wound coils are collectively attached to and supported from one surface of a printed circuit board and the coil wires are securely connected to the conductors on the board.
