An electronic meter incorporates a TCP/IP protocol suite and an HTTP server to provide two-way access to the meter data. Alternatively, the TCP/IP protocol suite may be incorporated into a gateway serving multiple meters connected through a power line or wireless two-way network. The gateway may incorporate an HTTP server for accessing data from multiple meters and for transmission of data to individual meters. Other aspects of the disclosed system include the use of a common gateway interface for remote access to meter data and to set meter parameters using HTML forms in HTTP browsers; remote reading and setting of multiple meter parameters using a TCP/IP protocol suite; a TCP/IP protocol suite implemented in designated nodes in a CEBus LAN with remote access through TCP/IP to routers and brouters and to individual meters on the LAN; and an SLIP-PPP enabled gateway for remote TCP/IP access through a serial interface to a single or multiple meter parameters.

Remote access to electronic meters using a TCP/IP protocol suite

An automatic meter reading (AMR) system collects readings from multiple or individual meters or sets parameters in individual or multiple meters using the Short Message Service (SMS) in digital cellular networks. The individual meters incorporate interfaces to the SMS network so that parameters within the meter can be read and written to/from external devices that also interface to the SMS network. Communications gateways incorporate a single interface to the SMS network, which a set of non-SMS-enabled meters can access via a local area network (LAN).

Remote access to electronic meters using the short message service

A reconfigurable apparatus for computing systems including a set of baseboards and a family of daughtercards, together with a programmable interface to an external bus for a host system. Daughtercards attach to the baseboard through complementary connectors mounted on the baseboard and the daughtercards. In addition, daughtercards are constructed to allow stacking of daughtercards vertically. The baseboard and daughtercard approach of the present invention allows simple, incremental upgrade of installed boards by adding or replacing the daughtercards and allows simple migration to new systems by changing baseboards.

A universal reconfigurable printed circuit board that provides multiple sockets that can receive field reprogrammable logic devices, hard-wired interconnection circuits, or field reprogrammable interconnection devices interchangeably. Optimized interconnection topologies provide a large number of options for a variety of applications. A versatile interface circuit is used to interface with a personal computer bus during board configuration, and then can be reconfigured to perform application-specific functions.

Universal reconfigurable printed circuit board

A passive infrared detection and conversion circuit includes a pyrosensor, a current amplifier, a capacitor, and a signal processor circuit. The signal processor is operable to charge the capacitor to a first voltage level and to measure a capacitor discharge time, the time required for the capacitor to discharge from the first voltage level to a second voltage level. The signal processor is further operable to generate an electrical control signal responsive to a variation in the capacitor discharge time which corresponds to a significant motion event. When the pyrosensor is exposed to infrared motion, it generates a transient current, and the capacitor discharge time corresponds to the transient current. The signal processor circuit includes logic operable to compare the capacitor discharge time with a long-term average capacitor discharge time. The signal processor circuit generates the electrical control signal only when the capacitor discharge time deviates from the long-term average capacitor discharge time by exceeding a predetermined threshold margin and/or satisfying other timing and/or pulse sequence patterns. The logic of the signal processor circuit may be further operable to calculate and update the long-term average capacitor discharge time based on the capacitor discharge time such that the logic filters out unwanted background signals and component tolerance variations, thereby creating a dynamic threshold system for detecting significant motion.
