Disclosed is a passenger module () with a cover coupling mechanism (). The cover coupling mechanism has a generally C-shaped bracket (), which interfaces with a plurality of slots () defined in an air bag cover (). The C-shaped bracket further has a plurality of apertures () which interface with a plurality of threaded studs () on the module's housing.

An air bag module comprises an air bag having an interior cavity. The air bag has an air bag opening in communication with the interior cavity. The air bag module has an air bag inflator with an outlet for inflating the air bag. At least one vane extends from the air bag opening into the interior cavity of the air bag.

A steering column support having a bracket on the steering column secured to vehicle support structure by fasteners at the rear edge of the bracket. Isolator pads at the front edge of the bracket are clamped under pressure between the bracket and the support structure The isolator pads dampen vibration of the steering column and also prevent undesirable tilting or rocking of the steering column when the vehicle is in motion.

Apparatus for releasably locking the tilt steering column assembly of an automotive vehicle in adjusted position. A rack on the steering column assembly is engaged by a pawl to lock the steering column assembly in the position selected by the driver. A bracket is provided to positively hold the pawl engaged with the rack and prevent it from becoming disengaged. The tilt of the steering column can only be re-adjusted by moving the bracket so that the pawl can disengage the rack.

An instrument panel for an automotive vehicle has a door for concealing an air bag. The door is covered with an extension of the same decorative material that covers the instrument panel. The door is placed between two laterally spaced air vents.

The instrument panel assembly is made by initially forming an instrument panel substrate having a door-receiving notch, initially forming a door substrate, and attaching the door substrate to the instrument panel substrate so that the door substrate covers the notch and its sides extend beyond the notch and overlie portions of the instrument panel substrate. A single decorative cover layer is also initially formed. The attached substrates are positioned in a mold in spaced relation to the cover layer, and a foamable material is forced into the space to provide a foam padding for both the instrument panel and the door. The sides of the door substrate overlying the instrument panel substrate are braced to prevent distortion thereof during molding.

Method of making an instrument panel assembly

A support for the steering column of an automobile has capsules for dampening vibration while the automobile is in motion. A bracket on the steering column has flanges which are clamped between the capsules. The bracket flanges are frictionally held by the capsules but will break free of the frictional hold to permit collapse of the steering column in the event of a collision. The flanges and capsules are tapered so that when the driver is thrown forward against the steering wheel upon vehicle impact, the initial collapse of the steering column reduces the frictional hold to zero, thus eliminating frictional drag during further collapse of the steering column.

A column-mounted shift control assembly includes a gate and mounting bracket, a shift lever unit rotatably mounted on the bracket, a shift handle pivotally mounted on the shift lever unit, and resilient means for urging the terminal end of the shift handle toward the bracket. The latter includes a planar gate portion having detents formed on an edge thereof for selective cooperation with the shift handle terminal end to select a desired transmission shift position. An ignition interlock mechanism cooperates with the terminal end of the shift handle to prevent its movement out of the Park detent position unless the ignition switch key is turned on, and further prevents the ignition switch from being turned back to Lock unless the terminal end is in Park position, thus preventing key extraction.

An apparatus for an air bag safety restraint system comprising a deployment door (70), a chute (30) adapted to fit within an opening (24) within a component (20) of a vehicle and receive a deployment door (70). The chute (30) includes a first side (32a) and second side (32d). The second side (32d) includes a wall portion (34d) a snap-fit mechanism (125). The deployment door (70) including a substrate (70) including a cover member (74), a hinge member (78) formed along one side of the cover member (74), a flange (124) extending from the cover member (74) from a second side thereof and a tear seam (122) between the second side and the flange. The tear seam (122) being stressed and broken upon inflation of the air bag (69) permitting the cover member (74) to rotate about the hinge member permitting the air bag (69) to deploy, the flange (124) including receptacles 134a-c for engaging the snap-fit mechanism (125).

A steering column bracket assembly for a collapsible vehicle steering column includes at least one support bracket for attaching one portion of the steering column to vehicle support structure and a mounting bracket for attaching another portion of the steering column to vehicle support structure and including a structure for restraining movement of the steering column along its longitudinal axis. The steering column bracket assembly also includes a structure attached to the mounting bracket for absorbing energy of the steering column during a collision type impact of the vehicle.
