A low sulfate ash lubricating oil composition comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity, 0.1 to 3.0% of a calcium overbased acidic material, 0.1 to 2.0% of a magnesium overbased acidic material, and at least 0.5% of a combination of an alkylene-coupled hindered phenol antioxidant and an antioxidant other than an alkylene-coupled hindered phenol antioxidant, is particularly useful for lubricating stationary gas engines.

Low ash lubricant compositions containing multiple overbased materials and multiple antioxidants

This invention relates to compositions which are useful as additives in lubricants and fuels, and more particularly, to additives which are chlorine-free or contain only minor amounts of chlorine. More particularly, carboxylic compositions are described which are prepared by reacting a terpolymer derived from a mixture of monomers comprising ethylene, an alpha-olefin containing 3 to about 20 carbon atoms, and a non-conjugated polyene with an alpha,beta-monounsaturated dicarboxylic acid or reactive derivative thereof. These carboxylic compositions may be used in lubricating oil or fuel compositions or may be used to form carboxylic derivative compositions which are useful in lubricating oil and fuel compositions. Such useful carboxylic derivative compositions can be prepared by reacting at least one of the above-described carboxylic compositions with a reactant selected from the group consisting of (A) amines characterized by the presence within their structure of at least one H--N&lt; group, (B) alcohols, (C) reactive metal or reactive metal compounds, and (D) a combination of two or more of any one of (A) through (C), the components of (D) being reacted with one or more of the carboxylic compositions simultaneously or sequentially in any order. In another embodiment, the carboxylic composition may be prepared by reacting a mixture of an alpha-olefin polymer, the above-described terpolymer, and an alpha,beta-monounsaturated dicarboxylic acid or reactive derivative thereof.

Carboxylic compositions, derivatives,lubricants, fuels and concentrates

This invention provides an oil additive composition which may be used as an additive for both diesel engine lubricants and transmission lubricants. Additives useful in diesel engine lubricants often do not meet the requirements of specific transmission lubricant specifications. Surprisingly, the inventive composition, which comprises a combination of a neutral or basic alkali metal salt of a phenol sulfurized using elemental sulfur, a metal salt of a dithiophosphoric acid, an ashless dispersant, a calcium or magnesium sulfonate detergent, and a manganese carboxylate, may be used to create lubricants for both engine and transmission use.

Oil additive package useful in diesel engine and transmission lubricants

A lubricating oil composition providing less than 1% sulfated ash comprises an additive package of a carboxylic dispersant, a rust inhibiting mixture, a hydrocarbyl substituted phenol prepared without sulfur or chlorine, and a neutralized acid or phenol.

Low ash lubricant composition

A diesel lubricant exhibiting improved ability to minimize undesirable viscosity increases when used in diesel engines is described. More particularly, in accordance with the present invention, a diesel lubricant is described which comprises a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity and a minor amount, sufficient to minimize undesirable viscosity increases of the lubricant when used in diesel engines, of a composition comprising (A) at least one carboxylic derivative composition produced by reacting at least one substituted succinic acylating agent with at least one amino compound containing at least one --NH-- group wherein said acylating agent consists of substituent groups and succinic groups wherein the substituent groups are derived from polyalkene characterized by an Mn value of at least about 1200 and an Mw/Mn ratio of at least about 1.5, and wherein said acylating agents are characterized by the presence within their structure of an average of at least about 1.3 succinic groups for each equivalent weight of substituent groups, and (B) at least one basic alkali or alkaline earth metal salt of at least one acidic organic compound having a metal ratio of at least about 2. The composition should have a TBN in the range of about 6 to about 15, with the sucinnic acid derivative contributing about 0.5 to 1.5 TBN to the composition. The alkali or alkaline earth metal salts (detergents) should contribute the rest of the TBN of the composition. TBN is measured by the ASTM D2896 method. Magnesium should contribute less than about 30% of the total TBN of the composition. The invention also includes methods for operating diesel engines which comprises lubricating said engines during operation with the diesel lubricants of the invention.

Diesel lubricants and methods

Lubricating oil compositions for internal combustion engines are described which comprise (A) a major amount of oil of lubricating viscosity, and minor amounts of (B) at least one carboxylic derivative composition produced by reacting (B-1) at least one substituted succinic acylating agent with (B-2) from about 0.70 equivalent up to less than one equivalent, per equivalent of acylating agent, of at least one amine compound characterized by the presence within its structure of at least one HN&lt; group, said acylating agents being characterized by the presence within their structure of an average of at least 1.3 succinic groups for each equivalent weight of substituent groups, and (C) at least one metal salt of a dihydrocarbyl dithiophosphoric acid wherein (C-1) the dithiophosphoric acid is prepared by reacting phosphorus pentasulfide with an alcohol mixture comprising at least 10 mole percent of iopropyl alcohol and at least one primary aliphatic alcohol containing from about 3 to about 13 carbon atoms, and (C-2) the metal is a Group II metal, aluminum, tin, iron, cobalt, lead, molybdenum, manganese, nickel or copper.

Lubricating oil compositions and concentrates

Lubricating oil compositions for internal combustion engines are described with comprise (A) a major amount of oil of lubricating viscosity, and minor amounts of (B) at least one carboxylic derivative composition produced by reacting (B-1) at least one substituted succinic acylating agent with (B-2) at least one amine compound characterized by the present within its structure of at least one HN&lt; group (C) at least one partial fatty acid ester of a polyhydric alcohol, and (D) at least one metal salt of a dihydrocarbyl dithiosphosphoric acid. The oil compositions also may contain (E) at least one carboxylic ester derivative composition, and/or (F) at least one neutral or basic alkaline earth metal salt of at least one acidic organic compound.

Lubricating oil compositions for internal combustion engines are described with comprise (A) a major amount of oil of lubricating viscosity, and minor amounts of (B) at least one carboxylic derivative composition produced by reacting (B-1) at least one substituted succinic acylating agent with (B-2) acylating agent of at least one amine compound characterized by the presence within its structure of at least one NH&lt; group, and wherein the substituted succinic acylating agent consists of substituent groups and succinic groups wherein the substituent groups are derived from a polyalkene, (C) at least one basic alkali metal salt of sulfonic or carboxylic acid, and (D) at least one metal salt of a dihydrocarbyl dithiophosphoric acid. The oil compositions also may contain (E) at least one carboxylic ester derivative compositions, and/or (F) at least one neutral or basic alkaline earth metal salt of at least one acidic organic compound and/or (G) at least one partial fatty acid ester of a polyhydric alcohol.

A lubricating oil formulation is described which is useful in internal combustion engines. More particularly, lubricating oil compositions for internal combustion engines are described with comprise (A) a major amount of oil of lubricating viscosity, and at least 2.0% by weight of (B) at least one carboxylic derivative composition produced by reacting (B-1) at least one substituted succinic acylating agent with (B-2) at least one amine compound characterized by the presence within its structure of at least one HN&lt; group, and wherein said substituted succinic acylating agent consists of substituent groups and succinic groups wherein the substituent groups are derived from a polyalkylene, said polyalkene being characterized by Mn value of about 1300 to about 5000 and an Mw/Mn value of about 1.5 to about 4.5, said acylating agents being characterized by the presence within their structure of an average of at least 1.3 succinic groups for each equivalent weight of substituent groups, and (C) from about 0.05 to about 5% by weight of a mixture of metal salts of dihydrocarbyl phosphorodithioic acids wherein in at least one of the dihydrocarbyl phosphorodithioic acids, one of the hydrocarbyl groups (C-1) is an isopropyl or secondary butyl group, the other hydrocarbyl group (C-2) contains at least five carbon atoms, and at least about 20 mole percent of all of the hydrocarbyl groups present in (C) are isopropyl groups, secondary butyl groups or mixtures thereof, provided that at least about 25 mole percent of the hydrocarbyl groups in (C) are isopropyl groups, secondary butyl groups, or mixtures thereof when the lubrication oil compositions comprise less than about 2.5% by weight of (B). In one embodiment, the oil compositions contain at least about 0.05 weight percent of isopropyl groups, secondary butyl groups of mixtures thereof derived from the mixture of metal salts of phosphorodithioic acids (C). The oil compositions also may contain other desirable additives such as (D) at least one neutral or basic alkaline earth metal salt of at least one acidic organic compound and/or (E) at least one carboxylic ester derivative. In one embodiment, the oil compositions of the present invention contain the above additives and other additives described in the specification in amounts sufficient to enable the oil to meet all the performance requirements of the API Service Classification identified as 'SG', and in another embodiment the oil compositions of the invention will contain the above additives and other additives described in the specification in amounts sufficient to enable the oils to satisfy the requirements of the API Service Classification identified as 'CE'.

Lubricating oil compositions

Condensation products made by reacting an alpha-haloalkyl hydroxy-aromatic compound also having at least one non-fused hydrocarbyl substituent with at least one olefinic nitrile, carboxylic acid or carboxylic acid derivative are useful as additives for fuels and lubricants. The number of carbon atoms in the aromatic hydrocarbyl compound's substituents are each about 25 while the haloalkyl group contains from one to about 36 carbons. The acid or nitrile reactant usually contains three to about forty carbons. Products made from halomethyl alkyl-substituted phenols and .alpha.,.beta.-olefinic diacid derivatives such as maleic anhydride are particularly useful. Similarly useful products can be made from these condensation products by further reacting their acid, acid derivative or nitrile groups with alcohols, polyols, monoamines, polyamines, metal salts or metals.
