A method of spawning a communication service comprises the steps of detecting (201) a failed call attempt initiated by a first communication unit (101) and directed to a second communication unit (109), and determining (207) if a code associated with the first communication unit (101) is an authorized code associated with the second communication unit (109), wherein the first communication unit (101) is associated with a first user and the second communication unit (109) is associated with a second user. If the code is an authorized code, a communication service is spawned (209), resulting in a message directed at a user other than the second user, such as the first user or a third user, or a communication unit other than the second communication unit (109), such as the first communication unit (101) or a third communication unit (109), which may be associated with a third user other than the first user or the second user.

Method of spawning a communication service

A profile is maintained, either in a central profile data base (106) or in a more distributed manner that includes local profile data bases (706). These profile data bases include preference information for particular users, which preference information is utilized by the system to direct various messages from various sources to various destinations for a particular user. By accessing the system through an appropriate input source (708), the user can provide temporary over-ride instructions that cause this preference information to be temporarily altered. When so altered, messages that would ordinarily be directed to a location in accordance with the original entries to the profile data base will be directed instead to a temporary destination (707) as identified by the user. This temporary destination can either be identified in particular at the time of entering the temporary over-ride instruction, or can be pre-identified in an over-ride plan (709). The over-ride instruction will be removed and the original conditions reset upon occurrence of a predetermined event. This predetermined event can be, for example, occurrence of a pre-established expiration time and/or reception of a reset instruction subsequent to reception of the temporary over-ride instruction.

Temporary message routing and destination selection

A local-area RF communication unit (305) is incorporated in a portable housing, such as a briefcase (101), and adapted to communicate with personal communication devices, such as a handset (105) and notepad (107). One or more wide-area RF communication units (303) are disposed in the briefcase (101) and adapted to communicate with a wide-area communication system. The local-area RF communication unit (305) and the wide-area communication unit are selectively controlled by a microprocessor (301) within the briefcase (101).

A personal communicating computer (112) (FIG. 1) remains in contact, via a wireless network, with an office server (101). Documents from various sources can be transmitted to the personal communicating computer (112) using this network. Upon receipt, such documents can be accessed and utilized in a variety of ways. In particular, such documents can be annotated in a variety of ways, and those annotations forwarded on to other destinations for appropriate review and handling.
