A steering rack includes an elongate member, a plurality of steering rack teeth, and a ramp function. The elongate member has a first portion disposed opposite a second portion. The plurality of steering rack teeth are cut and formed into the first portion. Each tooth of the plurality of steering rack teeth have a substantially constant height across a length of the elongate member. The ramp function is formed into the second portion of the elongate member.

Steering rack and method of manufacturing the same

A method of manufacturing a torsion bar for a steering system is provided. The method includes supporting a torsion bar blank on a cold forming machine with a plurality of dies at a first end region of the torsion bar blank and a second end region of the torsion bar blank. The method also includes rolling the torsion bar blank to form an end region having a cylindrical outer surface extending from an axial end surface and a serrated portion disposed proximate the end region and axially offset from the axial end surface.

A gear arrangement includes a first section having a first plurality of teeth and at least a portion of the first section is made of a compliant material. There is also a second section having a second plurality of teeth. The second section is made of a stiff material. The first section is arranged axially adjacent to the second section and each of the first plurality of teeth has a tooth flank that changes axially across the tooth flank. A method for manufacturing a gear arrangement includes fabricating a first gear, which includes a first plurality of teeth, and a bearing from a compliant material. The method also includes mounting a second gear, which includes a second plurality of teeth, to the bearing, aligning the first plurality of teeth with the second plurality of teeth, and coupling the first gear with the second gear.

A delashing assembly includes a tightening device for tightening a nut in relation to a main shaft supported on bearings and a wireless interface, wherein torque information is received by the tightening device over the wireless interface. A main shaft and main nut assembly, as well as a steering system, may include the delashing assembly. A method of delashing the main shaft and main nut assembly includes providing a tightening device on a first end of the main shaft and sending torque information from a second end of the main shaft to the tightening device over the wireless interface.

An isolation system for a ball-screw assembly including: a ball-screw; a ball-screw nut wherein the ball-screw is configured to engage the ball-screw nut, the ball-screw nut is enclosed in a ball-screw nut container; and a member disposed between the ball-screw nut and the ball-screw nut container, the member having selected properties. A method of providing a degree of freedom to a steering mechanism, the method including: selecting a member, the member having selected properties; and interposing the member between a ball-screw nut and a ball-screw nut container.

A worm/worm gear assembly comprises a worm having teeth defined by at least one thread disposed thereon and a worm gear having teeth protruding from a surface thereof. At least one of the worm and the worm gear is fabricated from a resilient material. The teeth of the worm and the teeth of the worm gear are interengaged and in a compressive relationship with each other to maintain double flank contact therebetween. At low- or no-load conditions, the double flank contact is made at the opposing outer edges of each of the teeth. At moderate-load conditions, the contact extends from the opposing outer edges of each of the teeth toward the center of each of the teeth. A method for delashing a gear system comprises disposing the worm in mechanical communication with the worm gear and loading the worm gear to cause the worm gear to compressively engage the worm.

Double flank worm gear mechanism

A hob cutter includes a cutting portion and an abrading portion in mechanical communication with the cutting portion. The cutting portion includes a plurality of hob teeth having at least one gash extending therethrough to define a cutting face on a front of each hob tooth and a trailing face on a back of each hob tooth. The abrading portion includes a plurality of abrading teeth positioned adjacent to each other. Both the hob teeth and the abrading teeth are continuously formed and helically arranged.
