A vessel has a lumen defined at least in part by a wall. The wall has an interior surface facing the lumen, an outer surface, and a plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) coating set supported by the wall. The PECVD coating set comprises a water barrier coating or layer having a water contact angle from 80 to 180 degrees, applied using a precursor comprising at least one of a saturated or unsaturated fluorocarbon precursor having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms and a saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms. Optionally, the coating set includes an SiOx gas barrier coating or layer from 2 to 1000 nm thick, in which x is from 1.5 to 2.9 as measured by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and optionally other related coatings.

The method of the present invention provides a high yield pathway to 2,5-dimethylhexadiene from renewable isobutanol, which enables economic production of renewable p-xylene (and subsequently, terephthalic acid, a key monomer in the production of PET) from isobutanol. In addition, the present invention provides methods for producing 2,5-dimethylhexadiene from a variety of feed stocks that can act as 'equivalents' of isobutylene and/or isobutyraldehyde including isobutanol, isobutylene oxide, and isobutyl ethers and acetals. Catalysts employed in the present methods that produce 2,5-dimethylhexadiene can also catalyze alcohol dehydration, alcohol oxidation, epoxide rearrangement, and ether and acetal cleavage.

A hybrid wax compositions that are suitable for use in manufacturing wax articles (e.g., candles) by compression molding. The combination of a hydrogenated natural oil-based wax and a paraffin wax having a select distribution of hydrocarbon chain lengths provides the hybrid wax compositions with improved properties, such as improved compressive strength and improved de-molding characteristics, for example, as evidenced by reducing scarring and/or flashing. The hybrid wax compositions comprise: (a) a wax comprising a hydrogenated natural oil; and (b) a paraffin wax, wherein the paraffin wax comprises less than about 50% by weight of the hybrid wax composition, and wherein about 52% or greater of hydrocarbons in the paraffin wax have carbon chain lengths ranging from C25 to C29.

Renewable compositions

Isobutene, isoprene, and butadiene are obtained from mixtures of Cand/or Colefins by dehydrogenation. The Cand/or Colefins can be obtained by dehydration of Cand Calcohols, for example, renewable Cand Calcohols prepared from biomass by thermochemical or fermentation processes. Isoprene or butadiene can be polymerized to form polymers such as polyisoprene, polybutadiene, synthetic rubbers such as butyl rubber, etc. in addition, butadiene can be converted to monomers such as methyl methacrylate, adipic acid, adiponitrile, 1,4-butadiene, etc. which can then be polymerized to form nylons, polyesters, polymethylmethacrylate etc.

Integrated methods of preparing renewable chemicals

Polylactide resins are blended with core-shell rubber particles to improve impact strength. A good balance of impact strength and transparency is achieved when the rubber particles are distributed within the polymer matrix such that most of them exist as single particles or agglomerates having a diameter of 150 nanometers or more, and the number average size of the particles and agglomerates is not more than 210 nanometers.
