A bullet with controlled fragmentation has a core in the form of a generally cylindrical body having a forward end and a rear end and intermediate side portions extending there between, the forward end of the core defining a cavity, a jacket encompassing the rear end and at least selected portions of the sides of the core, the jacket having a sidewall having a first drive band portion having a first wall thickness, and a second portion immediately forward of the drive band portion having a second thickness less than the first thickness, the exterior of the jacket defining a cannelure groove encircling the bullet, and the cannelure groove being positioned forward of the first drive band portion. The drive band may have forward edge defining a step. The bullet of the present invention may also be received in the case mouth of a rimless case and be partially protruding therefrom.

Bullet with controlled fragmentation

A bullet or a cartridge containing a bullet having an elongated body with a forward end and an opposed rear end. The body has an intermediate cylindrical portion between the rear and forward ends, and the front end of the body defines a cavity. A resilient nose element is received in the cavity. The nose element may be an elastomer, and may be a cylindrical body. The cavity may be a cylindrical bore, and the nose element may be closely encompassed within the bore. The forward end of the nose element may be flat, and may be flush with the forward end of the body.

Cartridge and bullet with controlled expansion

A firearm cartridge with a bullet including a body and a nose element. The body has a forward end, and an opposed rear end, with an intermediate cylindrical portion between the ends. The front end of the body defines a cavity that may have a cylindrical shape. The nose element is formed of a resilient material such as an elastomer, and has a first portion received in the cavity, and a pointed second portion extending from the forward end of the body. The bullet may be received in a centerfire rifle casing, for safe use in a tubular magazine rifle, so that the resilient tip protects against discharge of an adjacent cartridge primer by absorbing energy of recoil or other impulse. The second portion of the tip has a small meplat, and is smoothly contoured with the exterior surface of the front of the bullet, to provide an increased ballistic coefficient.

A firearm cartridge with a rimmed metal case having a body portion having a rim and a cylindrical wall portion adjacent to the rim. The body portion has dimensions corresponding to a 22 Long Rifle specification. The case has a tapered shoulder portion contiguous with the first portion, and a neck portion contiguous with the shoulder portion and a defining a mouth. The mouth closely receives a bullet having a diameter less than .22 caliber, and the case has a length significantly greater than 0.66 inch. The case may be formed with a neck that is relatively short compared to the body portion and overall length, to provide improved cartridge trajectory performance.
