Method of stabilizing fabric softening compositions

A liquid general-purpose cleaner, having improved non-streak and cleaning properties, is obtained if in a liquid-compatible medium which comprises a nonionic surfactant, an at least partially esterified resin and water or a mixture of water and a water-miscible organic solvent, as nonionic a topped nonionic surfactant is used containing less than 2% by weight of non-alkoxylated material and less than 4% by weight of mono-alkoxylated material. By using this nonionic surfactant, less partially esterified resin and less perfume are required to achieve effects similar to those obtained when a non-topped nonionic surfactant is used.

General-purpose cleaning composition

The present invention provides a solid bleaching block on the basis of an alkali metal monopersulphate for use in an in-cistern dispensing device, also comprising at least 5% by weight of an alkaline earth metal soap. By the use of these soaps, blocks are obtained which release the bleaching agent at an acceptable rate yet maintain their block structure.

A detergent-containing water-insoluble closed bag is so constructed as to open and discharge its contents under mechanical action in a washing machine in use. The seams of the bag may be heat-sealed or cold pressure sealed such that at least one seam will burst open in use. The bag material may be porous with a pore size selected to minimize dusting of the detergent. The bag material may include a thermoplastic component to enable heat-sealing. The bag may contain conventional detergent compositions and/or other fabric treatment materials. These products give consumer benefits both by way of improved efficiency in the use of the detergent compositions and in greater convenience in use.

Thick and opaque general-purpose cleaning compositions having streak-free cleaning benefits are obtained by the use, in a composition comprising a nonionic detergent surfactant, an anionic detergent surfactant and an at least partially esterified resin, of a nonionic detergent surfactant with an HLB-value of between 3 and 10 and an anionic synthetic detergent in the form of its magnesium salt.

A liquid general-purpose cleaner, having improved nonstreak and cleaning properties is obtained by inclusion, in a liquid compatible medium, of an at least 5% alcohol esterified resin copolymer and a nonionic surfactant having an HLB-value of between 10 and 15. The composition contains generally less than 5% of inorganic electrolyte salts, and can be applied to hard surfaces either in dilute form or neat.

An article is disclosed which is suitable for wiping hard surfaces such as glass to give a streak-free finish. The article comprises a substrate (preferably paper or non-woven fabric) carrying a homogeneous aqueous composition having a surface tension below 45 mNm.sup.-1 and which on drying does not form discrete droplets or particles larger than 0.25 .mu.m. The liquid composition advantageously includes a (preferably nonionic) surface-active agent and a partially esterified resin such as a partially esterified styrene/maleic anhydride copolymer. The article may be wet (for example, coated or impregnated with the liquid composition) or dry up to the point of use (for example, the liquid may be within pressure-rupturable microcapsules). Preferably the article is produced by a process which includes prewashing the substrate to remove any potentially streak-forming impurities.

Production of detergent compositions

A detergent product comprises a particulate detergent composition contained within a closed water-insoluble bag which has a water-sensitive seal, whereby the contents of the bag are discharged on contact of the bag with water. Use of such detergent products improves detergent dosage control and hence cost-effectiveness, and is particularly beneficial for detergent compositions of higher density than customary or which contain water-insoluble ingredients.
